Hello James Lloyd Alvarado, thanks for posting this in our community.
Some programs override default key combinations. For example, in Microsoft Word, Alt + Q opens the “Tell Me” box. If the app has reassigned or disabled this shortcut, it won’t work. To check, try Alt + Q in another application like Notepad or a browser. If it works there, the issue is app-specific and you may need to reset or customize shortcuts in that app.
Verify your keyboard layout and language settings because an incorrect input language or layout can block certain key combinations. Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region > Keyboard Layout. Make sure the correct layout, such as US QWERTY, is active and remove unnecessary layouts to avoid conflicts.
Test your physical keyboard. Sometimes the Q key works alone but fails in combination due to hardware issues. Use the On-Screen Keyboard (type “osk” in Run) and try Alt + Q. If it works on OSK, your physical keyboard may have a matrix issue. Try another keyboard or connect via USB/Bluetooth.
Disable any conflicting hotkey software. Third-party tools like screen recorders, gaming overlays, or macro apps can hijack shortcuts. Check running apps for hotkey settings and temporarily disable or uninstall them to test.
Check Sticky Keys or accessibility settings. These can interfere with shortcuts. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and make sure Sticky Keys and Filter Keys are turned off.
Update or reinstall your keyboard driver. Corrupted drivers can cause odd behavior. Open Device Manager > Keyboards and update the driver. If the issue persists, uninstall the driver and restart your PC to reinstall it automatically.
Kind regards,
John Oli
