    Hi Suhas,

When Microsoft Word shows “features are locked” while trying to insert a table, it means Word is running in a restricted or reduced-functionality mode, not that the table feature itself is broken. This happens when Word is not fully activated or when the document is opened in a protected state.

The most common causes are that Office is not activated, the license cannot be verified, or Word is signed in with the wrong account. Even if Word opens normally, if activation fails, editing features such as inserting tables, pictures, or formatting are locked. You can confirm this by opening Word and checking File → Account; if you see “Product Information: Unlicensed” or a prompt to activate, this is the reason.

Another frequent cause is that the document itself is opened in Protected View or Read-Only mode. Files opened from email attachments, downloads, or certain network locations are blocked by default, which locks editing features. In this case, Word will display a yellow bar at the top asking you to Enable Editing.

To fix the issue, first make sure Office is fully activated by signing in with the Microsoft account or work/school account that owns the license and completing activation. If activation is already shown as successful, close Word completely and reopen it to refresh the license. Next, check whether the document is read-only or in Protected View and enable editing if prompted. If the problem continues across all documents, repairing Office from Apps & Features → Microsoft Office → Modify → Online Repair usually restores full functionality.
