How to Insert page numbers in Word

The Microsoft article at

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/insert-page-numbers-9f366518-0500-4b45-903d-987d3827c007

starts with
"1. On the insert tab, select Page Number". I don't see that in my version of Word. Another article says to find the version of Word that I'm running "right-click the icon that you click to start Word..." That doesn't work on my system.

Perhaps I don't need to know what version of Word I'm running? That seems unlikely. Control Panel shows 16.0.19127.20302 for Microsoft Office Home and Student.

Thanks for your help.

You should see the Page Number drop down in the Header & Footer group on the Insert tab.

Alternatively, double-click the header area to activate the header/footer view, click where you want the page number (in the header or footer) and use the Alt+Shift+P shortcut to insert a page number field.

The "Header" and "Footer" labels will disappear when you leave the header/footer view. You can use the Close button on the Header & Footer ribbon tab or you can double-click in the main body of the document.

To remove bold formatting from a page number, do it the way you would in the main body of the document. Select the text and "unbold" by clearing the Bold option on the Home tab, or by using the Ctrl+B toggle.

Note that certain fonts may have an appearance that make them look bold, although they are not. If that is the case in your document, you may have to choose a different font.

To insert page numbers in Word, you can follow these steps:

    1. On the Insert tab, select Page Number.
    2. Choose the location where you want the page numbers to appear (e.g., top of the page, bottom of the page).
    3. You can also select the format of the page numbers if needed.

If you are unable to find the Insert tab or the Page Number option, it may be helpful to ensure that your version of Word is up to date. You mentioned that your version is 16.0.19127.20302, which indicates you are using a version of Microsoft Office that should support these features.

If the issue persists, consider checking for updates or troubleshooting your installation of Word, as there may be specific issues affecting your ability to access these features.
