Dear @Wendell Plain,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.
I understand you’re referring to the legacy Unhide worksheet behavior in Excel, where right‑clicking the sheet navigation area and repeatedly pressing the first letter of sheet names allowed you to cycle through worksheets that shared the same initial letter.
From my research and testing, Microsoft has updated this behavior, and that specific “first-letter cycling” method is no longer available. The Unhide dialog box has been modernized to behave more like a searchable list rather than a classic Windows menu.
In the latest versions of Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024, the old behavior of pressing a single letter to cycle through sheets has been replaced by two primary methods: Type-to-Search and Multi-Select.
The Unhide dialog now behaves more like a modern searchable list rather than a classic Windows menu.
- Continuous String Searching: Instead of pressing "S" repeatedly to jump between "Sales," "Summary," and "Staff," you can now only type the first letters to jump directly to the sheet name that matches that specific first letter.
- Multi-Select Support: One of the most requested features was recently added. You no longer have to unhide sheets one by one. You can now hold Ctrl or Shift while clicking names in the list to unhide multiple worksheets at once.

If you liked the "first letter" method for speed, these newer alternatives are often faster in large workbooks:
Search List: Right-click the sheet navigation arrows (bottom-left of the screen). This opens the "Activate" dialog, which lists all sheets and allows you to jump to one by typing its name.
Navigation Pane: Go to the View tab and click Navigation. This opens a sidebar that lists every sheet, table, and named range, allowing for instant filtering.
If the new search or selection behavior is not working as expected:
- Ensure it's not a "Very Hidden" sheet: If a sheet was hidden via VBA as xlSheetVeryHidden, it will not appear in the Unhide dialog at all. You must use the VBA editor (Alt + F11) to set its visibility back to xlSheetVisible.
- This issue often arises when "Protect Workbook Structure" is enabled under the Review tab, which grays out the Unhide option entirely.
I truly appreciate you sharing your experience. Your feedback on workflow regressions like this is incredibly valuable, and I strongly encourage you to submit it directly to the Excel product team through their official feedback channels. This is the most effective way to make your voice heard and influence future feature improvements and adjustments.
You can visit the Excel · Community to submit a new idea or vote on existing one. Our product team is in charge of the site, and they constantly check customer reviews and feedback. The higher votes, the more attention the related team will pay, and a lot of the features are developed and improved based on customer feedback. As a moderator, I will also pass along your feedback to the appropriate team for further consideration.
I really understand how convenient this feature would be for your workflow. I want you to know that I wish I had a way to change it for you directly but as a moderator of Q&A forum, my ability to assist is with the existing product functionality and the power to influence its design rests entirely with our product development team. I appreciate your kindness and understanding as we deal with these evolutionary product changes. Please get in touch if you need anything else.
Best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful and prosperous New Year.
