Changing my email on my Windows 11 laptop and Microsoft 365

My Windows 11 laptop is linked to a Hotmail email I do not use anymore. I have been using Outlook for almost a year. I just purchased Microsoft 365 and I had to link it to the old Hotmail account. I want to update my computer (Administrator) and Microsoft 365 to my Outlook account. How can I successfully do that?

To change your email account linked to your Windows 11 laptop and Microsoft 365 from your old Hotmail account to your new Outlook account, follow these steps:

1. Update your Microsoft 365 Email Address:
   • Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center and sign in with your admin account.
   • Navigate to Users > Active users.
   • Select your admin account and choose Manage username and email under Username and email.
   • Update your email address to your new Outlook account and select Save changes.
2. Change the Email Account on Windows 11:
   • Open Settings on your Windows 11 laptop.
   • Go to Accounts > Email & accounts.
   • Under Accounts used by other apps, find your old Hotmail account and select it.
   • Choose Remove to unlink the old account.
   • Now, select Add an account and choose Outlook.com or Exchange to add your new Outlook account.
   • Follow the prompts to sign in with your new Outlook email address.

After completing these steps, your Windows 11 laptop and Microsoft 365 should be updated to use your new Outlook account instead of the old Hotmail account.

You cannot transfer your Microsoft 365 subscription from one Microsoft account to another. Also, keep in mind that an account whose address ends in hotmail.com is, in fact, an Outlook account, as is accounts that end in outlook.com, live.com and msn.com. They're all Outlook accounts.

The correct way to change an account's address from using hotmail.com to outlook.com is to log into https://account.live.com/names/manage and add a new alias that ends in outlook.com to the account and make it the primary alias being careful to not remove the original hotmail.com alias. You can even disable logging into the account using the original alias.
