How do I make the table of contents in Word hyperlink to the heading in the document act with a mouse click rather than Ctrl+Click?

Is there a way to make a hyperlink in the table of contents navigate directly to the heading in the document by left-clicking the mouse over the TOC heading or page number rather than just the "CTRL and click" option?

    Hello @DocMoPho,

Thank you for reaching out to the Q&A forum!

Wishing you a Happy New Year 2026!

For your situation, could you reconfirm this point:

Are you asking about how to make the Table of Contents in Word behave like a hyperlink that you can open with a single left-click to jump to the heading in the document, instead of the default behavior that requires Ctrl + click?

If I understand correctly, by default, Word uses Ctrl + click to prevent accidental navigation while editing. However, if you prefer, you can disable this requirement so that a simple left-click will take you directly to the heading. Here are detail steps:

    • You can open a Word document that has an automatic Table of Contents.
    • Then go to File => Options => Advanced.
    • Under Editing options, you find and uncheck the setting Use CTRL + Click to follow hyperlink and click OK

    • After that, you can return to your Table of Contents and try left-clicking on an entry.

I tested this in my own tenant, and it works as expected after disabling that option.

To create a table of contents (TOC) in Word that allows hyperlinks to navigate directly to the headings in your document, you can set the TOC entries to be formatted as hyperlinks. This is typically the default behavior when you create a TOC in Word. However, if you want to ensure that the hyperlinks work without needing to hold down the "CTRL" key, you can check the settings for the TOC.

When adding a TOC, you can specify options such as UseHyperlinks, which allows entries in the table of contents to be formatted as hyperlinks when the document is published to the web. This means that users can click on the TOC entries directly to navigate to the corresponding headings in the document.

If you are using the Word API, you can set the useHyperlinksOnWeb property to true when adding the TOC to ensure that hyperlinks are enabled. This allows for a more seamless navigation experience.

For more detailed guidance on how to insert a table of contents and manage its hyperlink settings, you can refer to the official Microsoft documentation.
