How do you renew a license for a Microsoft 365 business basic account that has expired?

I already owned a yearly subscription for a Microsoft 365 business basic plan, and it recently expired. I am not the current Administrator for this account. So, I created a new password and username for this account to log into the account. My goal was to login so that I could renew the yearly license while keeping the same email address attached to the Business Basic account. I successfully created a new username and password, with the help of the current Administrator approving the username password change. Then I tried to buy a new Business Basic subscription using the same email address attached to the expired account (I hope that the new subscription would renew the expired account). Then Microsoft said there is an issue accepting my payment. Has anyone tried to renew an expired subscription using the method that I described? I would appreciate anyone's suggestions and/or you share experience.

To renew a Microsoft 365 Business Basic subscription that has expired, you can follow these steps:

    1. Access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center: Since you mentioned that you are not the current Administrator, you will need to work with the current Administrator to access the Admin Center.
    2. Check Subscription Status: The Administrator should go to Billing > Your products in the Admin Center to check the status of the expired subscription.
    3. Reactivate Subscription: If the subscription is expired, the Administrator can select the subscription and choose Reactivate subscription. This may involve confirming payment details.
    4. Ensure Payment Information is Correct: If there is an issue with accepting payment, the Administrator should verify that the payment method linked to the account is valid and has sufficient funds.
    5. Consider New Subscription: If reactivation does not work, you may need to purchase a new subscription. The Administrator can do this by selecting Buy Microsoft 365 Business Basic and following the prompts to complete the purchase.
    6. Assign Licenses: After reactivation or purchase, ensure that the necessary licenses are assigned to the users who need access.

If you encounter any issues during this process, it may be helpful to contact Microsoft support for assistance.

    Hi @Elodia Cruz Ortega,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing the details of your situation. I understand your goal is to renew your expired Microsoft 365 Business Basic subscription while keeping the same email address, and I appreciate the steps you’ve already taken to regain access.

You can keep the same email address and domain, but the renewal must happen within the original tenant and be completed by someone with the appropriate admin or billing role. Purchasing a new Business Basic plan from the public signup page - even with the same email - creates a new tenant, which will not reactivate the expired subscription. The person who signs up becomes the admin of that new tenant, so it won’t help with renewing the existing one.

    A. How to renew within the same tenant

    • Ask the current admin to grant you Billing Administrator (least privilege) or temporarily Global Administrator in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center: Users > Active users > Select your account > Manage roles
    • If your organization uses the Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA) model, you’ll also need a Billing account role (Owner or Contributor) on the billing account to purchase or edit products.
    • Once you have the correct permissions:
      • Sign in at admin.microsoft.com
      • Go to Billing > Your products
      • Locate the expired subscription and select Reactivate

    B. Fixing payment issues

If your payment cannot be processed, the best next step is to contact the Billing Support team through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center:

1/ Log into admin.microsoft.com with your admin credentials. If you don't have admin permissions, you'll need to contact someone in your organization who does.

2/ Select the green help & support button typically located at the bottom right of the admin center dashboard. Click on it to open the support pane.

X Help & support Search your Give Feedback

3/ Type in “I need to fix payment issue to renew expired license.” into the search bar.

    4/ Select “Contact support”.

5/ Choose your preferences: preferred contact method, preferred time zone, and preferred contact language.

6/ Fill in your details and give a strong description of your problem for a quicker resolution. You can add a file, a screenshot, or a video for added support. Once you’ve filled out the details, select Contact me at the bottom.
