Dear @Abdullah Abu sukhen,
Welcome to the Q&A Community and thank you for getting in touch about adding your custom domain to Microsoft 365. We appreciate your initiative and you’re already on the right track by verifying your DNS ownership.
To help you move forward smoothly, here’s what’s happening and how we can resolve it efficiently:
Your domain is currently associated with a different Microsoft 365 (Entra ID) tenant. As a result, the system is protecting that association until the domain is released from the previous tenant. Once it is removed there, you will be able to add it to your current tenant without any issues.
If you no longer have admin access to the previous tenant, Microsoft’s Data Protection team can assist. They will verify your domain ownership and help release the domain so you can add it to your current tenant.
Step 1: Create the support ticket in your new tenant
Please sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center for your new (current) tenant and go to Support > Help & Support to create the ticket. Creating the ticket from the new tenant ensures the case is tied to the tenant where you intend to add the domain.
Step 2: Use this request template
Title: Unable to add custom domain to my current Microsoft 365 tenant because it is still associated with an old tenant, I no longer have access to.
Description:
- Briefly explain that the domain is verified via DNS but remains linked to the previous tenant.
- Request assistance from the Data Protection team to verify ownership and release the domain from the old tenant.
Step 3: Include the following information in the ticket
To help the support team resolve your case quickly, please attach or provide:
- A screenshot of the exact error message you see when adding the domain.
- The custom domain name you are trying to add.
- The Tenant ID of your current (new) tenant.
- The Tenant ID of the previous (old) tenant, if known.
- Any admin email addresses or aliases previously associated with the old tenant.
- A brief timeline of events, including when you last had access to the old tenant.
- Confirmation that you are the domain owner, and any supporting documents if requested.
This will allow the support team to review your case and provide the quickest resolution.
