Keyboard and Mouse Problem Fixed after Starting PowerShell s Adminstrator

Question

Problem started when the computer was started up in the morning. The mouse seemed to work but didn’t have scroll wheel function and the keyboard didn’t operate correctly.

Two error messages windows were opened;

You’re holding down the CTRL key. Do you want to start Excel in safe mode?

You’re holding down the CTRL key. Do you want to start Outlook in safe mode?

Pressing of the “v” on the keyboard caused return event.

Tried on-screen keyboard and it had the same problem.

Fix was to open PowerShell as administrator but the problem returns on restart or plugging the USB keyboard into a different port. Can always fix by open PowerShell as administrator.

Ran DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and sfc /scannow in PowerShell as administrator but they didn't fix the problem

Anyway to fix this without reinstalling windows 11 pro and all you apps?

Solved the problem by replacing the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard with a different keyboard.

Can no enter "msdt.exe -id KeyboardDiagnostic " because keyboard not functioning.

Uninstall/reinstall did not fix the problem.

on-screen keyboard has the same problem.

So far the only way to fix the problem is to run PowerShell as administrator, sometime it takes two tries to fix.

Open Command Prompt, then paste in this command and press Enter:

msdt.exe -id KeyboardDiagnostic

Run that Keyboard Troubleshooter to see if that can solve the problem.

If that does not resolve this for you

Open Device Manager

Expand the Keyboards section

Right click your keyboard and choose 'Uninstall'

Then restart your PC

If the problem is still not resolved:

Bring up the on-screen keyboard, is it indicated any keys are being pressed on the keyboard even though you are not pressing the keys?
