Dear @Warren Meyer,
Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.
I understand you would like to create Microsoft 365 Education and Minecraft Education licenses for your two homeschooling children. This is a very common question among homeschooling families, and I’m happy to clarify how licensing works.
Before giving you the best solution, could you please confirm these questions below to help me diagnose the issue more effectively:
- Are you registering as an individual parent/homeschool family, or on behalf of a formally accredited school or institution?
- During registration, are you prompted to verify a school email domain, or does the process fail before that step?
- Does your organization (if any) appear in Microsoft’s School Finder during the eligibility check?
- Have you ever received a message stating that the tenant was not eligible for Microsoft 365 Education or that the request was declined?
- Are you seeing a specific error code or message when the registration fails? If yes, what is the exact wording
At this time, Microsoft 365 Education (A1/A3/A5) accounts can only be created by officially recognized educational institutions, such as accredited schools, school districts, or universities. Unfortunately, individual parents or homeschooling families are not able to register a Microsoft 365 Education tenant directly, even for legitimate homeschooling purposes. Microsoft verifies school eligibility during registration, and personal or homeschool-only registrations are not approved.
Recommended option for homeschooling families
Microsoft offers Minecraft Education individual licenses, which are designed specifically for families and individual learners. With this option:
- Each child can use Minecraft Education with their own Microsoft account
- No school email domain or Microsoft 365 Education tenant is required
- You get full access to Minecraft Education learning content (coding, math, science, history, and more)
- This is a fully supported and compliant solution for homeschool use
For reference:
Moreover, I recommend using Microsoft Family Safety child accounts for each of your children, which allows you to safely manage their access, screen time, and permissions while they use Minecraft Education. For more information, please refer to Set up Microsoft Family Safety
Optional alternative
Some homeschooling families can gain access to Microsoft 365 Education only if their children are enrolled in a recognized homeschool co‑op or umbrella school that already qualifies as an educational institution and provides official student email accounts. This depends entirely on that organization’s eligibility, not on Microsoft.

Important note: I strongly recommend not attempting to register a Microsoft 365 Education tenant using personal or business details to simulate a school. These registrations are reviewed by Microsoft and may result in account suspension or loss of access.
