Hello James Serhant,
Thank you for reaching out in Microsoft Q&A forum.
I understand how confusing it is to see an “Organizational Policy” message when you’re only using a personal OneDrive account.
To fix it, try these steps:
A. Check if the file is inside a “managed” folder
If OneDrive auto‑enabled Desktop/Documents/Pictures backup after your reset, those folders may apply Windows rules.
- Open OneDrive settings > Sync and backup
- Click Manage backup
- If Desktop / Documents / Pictures are backed up > click Stop backup
- Once stopped, move the file elsewhere (e.g., to C:\Temp) and try deleting again.
B. Reset OneDrive (this clears leftover policies but does NOT delete your data)
- Press Win + R
- Paste this and press OK:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset - If you get “Windows cannot find…” try:
orC:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /resetC:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset - After reset, reopen OneDrive and try deleting the file.
C. Try deleting from OneDrive Web
Sometimes the desktop client blocks deletion, but the server allows it.
Go to: https://onedrive.live.com > Locate the file > Delete
D. If the file is a shortcut (.lnk)
OneDrive cannot sync certain shortcut files. If it’s a leftover link from Windows:
- Go to your OneDrive folder in File Explorer
- Sort by Type > look for
.lnkfiles - Delete directly on the OneDrive website if Windows blocks it.
Let me know how it goes.
