Why are Excel files now opening as "Read Only"?

Xcel file saved Nov 17. Opened the file on Dec 12 and it says "Read Only." I did not make that change to "read only." I searched how to remove the restriction. I looked at Info and Properties. It doesn't show as "read only" under my name, or device, or security. I did "save a copy" on Dec. 12; that file also shows as Read Only. The edits I made on Nov 17 are showing. The "copy" file Dec 12 shows the same edits. I looked at version history and tried to restore to an older version, but said it's unable to do that, as file is "read only." HELP!

There are several reasons why your Excel files might be opening as "Read Only." Here are some possibilities:

    1. File Permissions: If you do not have the necessary permissions to edit the file, it will open in read-only mode. This can happen if the file is located on a network drive or if the file owner has set it to read-only.
    2. File Attributes: The file itself may have been marked as read-only. You can check this by right-clicking the file, selecting Properties, and looking for the read-only attribute.
    3. File in Use: If the file is already open by another user or application, it may open as read-only to prevent conflicts.
    4. Corrupted File: Sometimes, files can become corrupted, which may cause them to open in read-only mode.
    5. Excel Settings: There may be settings in Excel that are causing it to open files in read-only mode by default.

To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps:

    • Check the file properties and ensure it is not marked as read-only.
    • Ensure you have the necessary permissions to edit the file.
    • Try saving the file to a different location or under a different name to see if that resolves the issue.
    • If the problem persists, consider checking for updates to Excel or repairing the installation.

If you encounter the error message "Cannot access read-only document <file name>," it indicates that you are trying to make changes to a file for which you only have read permissions. This could be due to the file being opened by another user or a permissions issue set by the file owner.
