Embarrassing, but I acquired a new laptop in a bit of a work crises and as I hurried to set it up just added Microsoft office, thinking it would register to me. I already have an office but it renews around this time so was like I this is a problem I'll cancel the other.

However - I accidentally registered it to one of my work email addresses - I am a freelancer so now this other company is in charge of this current one / I have paid for two. I have already flagged to their IT, but has anyone else been in this position or worked for Microsoft who can help? I cannot get a chat agent or a phone representative and I'm freaking out that this other company can now see everything I do with my own business / other businesses I am contracted with.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Alexis. Here is how to fix this:

    • Don't worry about your data: Unless you saved files directly to their OneDrive/SharePoint, they cannot see your local files on your laptop.

Cancel & Refund: Log in to account.microsoft.com using that work email. If it's a personal subscription you bought, you can usually cancel it within 30 days for a full refund.

Sign out: Open any Office app (Word/Excel), go to File > Account, and Sign Out of the work email. Then, sign in with your personal one.

    • Contact Support: If you can't cancel it yourself, use the 'Contact Us' page on Microsoft's site and select 'Billing' to talk to an agent. Good luck.
