What is the model of your HP laptop?

If you prefer, you can share a screenshot of your system information.

If your brightness slider is greyed out and unresponsive, there are a few potential issues and solutions you can consider:

    1. Check Power Settings: Sometimes, the brightness settings can be affected by your power plan. You can manually adjust the brightness settings using the command line:
      • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
      • To set the brightness when plugged in, use:

    powercfg -SETACVALUEINDEX {guidPlan-New} {guidSubgroup-Display} {guidPowerSetting-Brightness} <value>

    - To set the brightness when on battery, use:

    powercfg -SETDCVALUEINDEX {guidPlan-New} {guidSubgroup-Display} {guidPowerSetting-Brightness} <value>

    • Replace <value> with your desired brightness percentage (0-100).
    1. Update Display Drivers: Ensure that your display drivers are up to date. You can do this through Device Manager:
      • Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
      • Expand the "Display adapters" section, right-click your display driver, and select "Update driver".
    2. Check for Windows Updates: Sometimes, issues like this can be resolved with a Windows update. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
    3. Adaptive Brightness Settings: If your laptop supports adaptive brightness, ensure that this feature is not interfering. You can find this setting under Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Display.
    4. Scan for Malware: Since you mentioned concerns about a potential virus, running a full system scan with Microsoft Defender or another trusted antivirus program might help identify and resolve any underlying issues.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be worth consulting HP support or a professional technician for further assistance.
