Hello Cesareo Flores Gonzalez
The error occurs because a Windows Server Essentials product key cannot activate a Windows Server Standard installation. Each edition of Windows Server has its own unique product key type, and activation checks the edition against the key. Essentials is a distinct SKU with its own binaries and licensing terms, so the key is rejected when entered on Standard. This is by design and not a technical fault with your server.
If your intent is to run Windows Server Essentials, you need to install that edition directly, either by downloading the Essentials ISO or performing a clean install with the Essentials media. If you want to stay on Windows Server Standard, you must obtain a Standard edition key. There is no supported downgrade path from Standard to Essentials using activation alone. Microsoft does allow edition upgrades and conversions using DISM /online /Set-Edition, but only between compatible editions (for example, Standard to Datacenter). Essentials is not part of that conversion path.
In short, you cannot activate Windows Server Standard 2025 with an Essentials key. You must match the installed edition to the licensed key. If you only have an Essentials license, reinstall with the Essentials edition media. If you need Standard, purchase or obtain a Standard key.
I hope you've found something useful here. If it helps you get more insight into the issue, it's appreciated to accept the answer. Should you have more questions, feel free to leave a message. Have a nice day!
Harry.
