Word docs open, broken format and text boxes.

After an office or Windows update, documents on our network drive broke. When opened in Word, all formatting, text, and image boxes are altered and moved around the document. The document now looks like a jumbled mess of information after the update. Immersive Reader and view settings are set to default. Every machine that tries to open the documents results in the same jumbled mess. Other documents in a different folder open normally and look fine. Any thoughts?

It sounds like the issues you are experiencing with the Word documents may be related to the recent updates to Office or Windows. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

    1. Check for Updates: Ensure that both Microsoft Office and Windows are fully updated. Sometimes, subsequent updates can fix issues introduced by previous ones.
    2. Test with Other Documents: Since you mentioned that other documents in a different folder open normally, it may indicate that the specific documents are corrupted or affected by the update. Try opening the problematic documents on another machine to confirm if the issue persists.
    3. Recover Content: If the documents are corrupted, you can try recovering the content by opening them in Notepad. This method will strip all formatting but may allow you to recover the text.
    4. Change File Format: If you can open the documents, try saving them in a different format (like Rich Text Format) and then re-opening them in Word to see if that resolves the formatting issues.
    5. Create New Document: If the formatting is still jumbled, create a new document and copy the undamaged parts of the corrupted document into the new one.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to consider restoring the previous version of the documents if available or seeking further assistance from IT support.

    Dear @snuba,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand you’re experiencing formatting issues in Word documents after a recent update, where text boxes and layout appear broken. Based on your description, this behavior is most commonly associated with a missing or inaccessible document template or a layout/view setting change, rather than a general Word application fault.

Since the issue affects all machines and is isolated to documents stored in a specific network folder, it’s likely that those documents are attempting to reference a shared template or network resource that was changed, moved, or became unavailable during the update.

Please try the following troubleshooting steps:

1: Check the "Attached Template" Path

Word documents often rely on a template file (.dotx or .dotm). If the documents in that folder were built using a specific template located on the network, and the update changed the drive path (e.g., from F:\ to G:), Word will default to a basic layout, which causes text boxes and images to jump.

1.Open one of the "jumbled" documents.

    2.Go to File > Options > Add-ins.

3.At the bottom, in the Manage box, select Templates and click Go.

4.Look at the Document template path.

    • If the path is red, points to a location that no longer exists, or is blank, Word is failing to load the layout "skeleton."
    • Click Attach, navigate to a standard Normal.dotm or the original template, and ensure "Automatically update document styles" is checked temporarily to reset the layout.

    2.Verify the Document View Mode

Sometimes updates trigger a view change that persists across the folder's metadata.

    1. Go to the View tab.
    2. Ensure you are in Print Layout.
    3. If you are in "Web Layout," text boxes and images will wrap incorrectly and look like a "jumbled mess."

    3.Run an Office Repair

    1. Close all Office programs.
    2. Right-click the Start button and select Installed Apps (or Apps & Features).
    3. Find Microsoft 365 (or Microsoft Office) in the list.
    4. Click the three dots (...) or the Modify button.
    5. Select Online Repair for the best chance of success.

Additionally, I recommend reviewing the answer provided by the Q&A Assist above to see if it helps resolve the issue.

If none of the above solutions work, let me know in the comments for further investigation. Please note that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution. Thank you for your patience and understanding. I'm looking forward to your reply.
