Getting laptop Windows 11 to link as a device

My laptop was linked to my Microsoft 365 account, until it fell, and the hard drive was damaged. It had been running on Windows 10. I had a new non-disk hard drive installed, and they put Windows 11 on it (good move.) Now it shows up on my Microsoft 365 account with a computer screen icon, but no details as to what is it. There is an "Unlink" icon at the far right, but I've tried to unlink it several times. I get "Try again later.... something happened. Wait a bit, then try again.

Meantime, that laptop seems to be working fine with the Microsoft 365 apps, but I'd like to get it back to proper registration, so that in future it will be clear what it is. (I've had two different laptops showing as linked at one time. One was obsolete, gone, but I hadn't unlinked it, and then didn't know which was which.)

Thanks for any advice.

Five minutes later. I tried to unlink it again, and this time it worked.

To properly link your new laptop running Windows 11 to your Microsoft 365 account, you can try the following steps:

    1. Sign In to Your Microsoft Account: Ensure that you are signed in to your Microsoft account on the new laptop. You can do this by opening any Microsoft 365 app (like Word or Excel) and signing in with your credentials.
    2. Check Device Management: Go to the Microsoft account device management page to see if your device is listed there. If it shows up but without details, it may take some time for the system to fully recognize the new hardware.
    3. Unlinking Old Devices: If you are having trouble unlinking the old device, you might want to try accessing your Microsoft account from a different browser or clearing your browser cache and cookies. Sometimes, this can resolve issues with unlinking.
    4. Contact Support: If the unlinking issue persists, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for assistance. They can help you resolve any account-related issues that may be preventing you from unlinking the old device.
    5. Wait and Retry: As the error message suggests, sometimes waiting a bit and trying again can resolve temporary issues with the Microsoft account services.

By following these steps, you should be able to properly manage your devices linked to your Microsoft 365 account and ensure that your new laptop is correctly registered.
