Once i took it home, it won't reactivate windows. troubleshooter doesn't help and on my account it shows it as activated already. don't know what to do. the articles won''t pull up on the help docs either. even after finding and clicking on relevent articles.

    Hi Anthony Sisounthone,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I completely understand how frustrating it can be to deal with activation issues after replacing a motherboard.

First, kindly check your license type. If you have a Retail license, it can usually be reactivated after hardware changes by signing in with your Microsoft account and using the Activation Troubleshooter. However, if it’s an OEM license (preinstalled by the manufacturer), it’s tied to the original motherboard and may require purchasing a new license.

Please make sure you’re signed in with the same Microsoft account that was linked to your Windows digital license. Sometimes signing out and back in refreshes the activation status.

If the steps above don’t resolve the issue, please contact Microsoft Support and explain that the motherboard was replaced due to failure. They can assist you further with manual reactivation if your license qualifies.

I hope this information helps clear the situation. Please let me know if you have any further questions or need additional assistance. I’m here to help.

    Hello,

How did you obtain your license initially?

Did it come with the device preinstalled, or did you purchase it?

If you purchased it, did you purchase from Microsoft, or from third party?

Is it originally a Win7/8 key?

After replacing your motherboard, it is common to encounter issues with Windows activation, especially if it was previously activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account. Here are some steps you can take to resolve the issue:

    1. Use the Activation Troubleshooter: Since you've already tried this, ensure that you select the option indicating that you changed your hardware. If it still fails, proceed to the next steps.
    2. Check Your Microsoft Account: Log into your Microsoft account and verify that your device is listed under your devices. If it's not listed, this may be why the activation is failing.
    3. Contact Microsoft Support: If the troubleshooter does not work and your device is not listed, the best course of action is to contact Microsoft support directly. They can help you re-link your digital license to the new motherboard.
    4. Reactivation by Phone: In some cases, users have successfully reactivated their Windows by using the phone activation method. You can find this option in the activation settings.
    5. Check for Updates: Ensure that your Windows is fully updated, as sometimes updates can resolve activation issues.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, contacting support is likely the most effective solution to re-activate your Windows license after a hardware change.
