Hello Microsoft Support Team,

I am using a Dell OptiPlex 7020 (32-bit) desktop computer. This machine originally came with pre-installed Windows 7 Professional, and I still have the valid Windows 7 Pro product key.

Recently, the original hard disk drive failed, so I had to replace the HDD. After replacing it, I installed Windows 10 Pro on the same device.

I would like to kindly ask whether it is possible to activate Windows 10 Pro using the old Windows 7 Professional product key, considering that Windows 7 Pro was originally installed and licensed on this machine.

I would appreciate your guidance on this matter.

The AI reply above is not correct.

Officially the free upgrade time period to go from Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10 or 11 ended in 2016, however after that, there was a loophole that allowed the free upgrade to continue.

In September 2023, Microsoft finally closed that loophole and since then, it is no longer possible to activate Windows 10 or 11 with a previous Windows 7 or 8 licence key, you will need to purchase a new Windows licence.

Yes, it is possible to activate Windows 10 Pro using a valid Windows 7 Professional product key. Since your Dell OptiPlex 7020 originally came with Windows 7 Pro, you should be able to use that product key to activate your installation of Windows 10 Pro. This is part of Microsoft's upgrade path, where users can upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 using their existing product keys, provided that the key is still valid and has not been used on another device.

Make sure that you enter the product key during the activation process in Windows 10. If you encounter any issues, ensure that your device is connected to the internet, as activation requires an internet connection to validate the key.
