Sharing Stream (on SharePoint) video link in Teams still redirects to original SharePoint site and prompts external users for access

Hi,

I would like to clarify expected behaviour when sharing videos via Microsoft Teams and SharePoint.

Scenario:

  • A video file is stored in SharePoint Site A.
  • The video link (URL) is posted in a Microsoft Teams channel, which is backed by SharePoint Site B.
  • External (guest) users are members of the Teams channel and have access to SharePoint Site B.
  • When these users click the video link from Teams, they are redirected to SharePoint Site A and are prompted to request access.

Additional observation:

  • Even when the link is added to a page or location in SharePoint Site B, the video playback still redirects users to Site A.
  • The video itself is not uploaded or copied to Site B; only the video link is shared.

Question:

  • If a Stream (on SharePoint) video is currently stored in SharePoint Site A and shared to external users via a Teams channel (Site B), causing them to request access, will downloading the video and uploading it directly to Site B allow those external users to watch the video without additional access requests?

Is this the recommended approach for external sharing?

Goal: Allow external users who already have access to the Teams channel to play the video without additional access requests.

    Hi @Mohamed Irsyadudin

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Regarding your question about the changing the file save location:

If a Stream (on SharePoint) video is currently stored in SharePoint Site A and shared to external users via a Teams channel (Site B), causing them to request access, will downloading the video and uploading it directly to Site B allow those external users to watch the video without additional access requests?

I want to confirm that yes after downloading the video and uploading it directly to Site B will allow external users who are already members of the Teams channel (Site B) to access and watch the video without needing to request additional permissions.

After moving the video to Site B, please follow these steps when sharing the link:

    • Select Share on the video file. User's image
    • Click Link settings.User's image
    • Change the link type to “People you choose.”
    • Set the permission level to “Can view.” User's image
    • Click Apply.
    • After that choose "apply", then add the "Site B member" to the list people you choose
      User's image
    • Copy the link and share it in the Teams channel.

Note: The video must be stored in Site B for this to work. As long as the file remains in Site A, external users who do not have permission to Site A will continue to be prompted to request access even if the link is shared in a Teams channel associated with Site B.

Thank you again for your time and understanding. While my initial response may not resolve the issue immediately, I’d like to gather more details about your situation so I can assist you more effectively.

I really appreciate your patience, and I’m here to help. Looking forward to your response.

Wishing you and your family a prosperous New Year.

When sharing a video stored in SharePoint Site A via a Teams channel that is backed by SharePoint Site B, external users who click the link will indeed be redirected to Site A and prompted to request access. This behavior occurs because the video file itself resides in Site A, and access permissions are tied to that specific site.

If you download the video from Site A and then upload it directly to SharePoint Site B, external users who have access to Site B should be able to watch the video without encountering additional access requests. This approach is generally recommended for external sharing, as it ensures that the content is stored in a location where the users already have the necessary permissions, thus avoiding any access issues.

This method simplifies the user experience for external guests, allowing them to access the video directly without needing to request permissions for another site.
