I have just purchased HP Scanjet 5300 , based on various posts stating this will work on W7 and W10. I have tried BOTH, without success, under devices printer/scanner it only finds my existing Officejet Pro 8715 printer scanner. I have tried downloading VUE Scan software, older versions, while this runs and works, again as no driver detected , it invariably revers to my exist 8715 printer.

Have I bought a lemon as I have hundred of photos to scan as the 5300 does this in bulk feed process. Anyone have a driver or know where I can download one for either w10 or w7 ? Thanks

    Hi sam g,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that your HP Scanjet 5300 is not being detected on Windows 7 or Windows 10, and no compatible driver is found, causing the system to default to your existing Officejet Pro 8715 scanner.

Before proceeding, please confirm whether you have already tried the suggestions provided by the Q&A Assist. To addition, please try to follow these steps:

1, Connect the Scanjet 5300 to the PC using USB, power it on, then open Device Manager, expand Imaging devices or Other devices, and check whether the scanner appears with a warning icon.

    • If it appears as an unknown device, right‑click it and select Update driver.
    • Choose Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.

2, Select Imaging devices, then choose Generic Image Device, and complete the driver installation to test basic Windows image acquisition support.

3, Open Windows Fax and Scan, select New Scan, and check whether the Scanjet 5300 becomes selectable as a source device.

4, If Vuescan is installed, disconnect your Officejet Pro 8715 temporarily, reconnect only the Scanjet 5300, then launch Vuescan and manually select the scanner from the Source dropdown instead of using Auto detect.

5, Open Settings > Printers and scanners, remove the Officejet Pro 8715 temporarily, then select Add a printer or scanner and allow Windows to rescan hardware.

6, Ensure Windows is fully updated by opening Settings > Windows Update and selecting Check for updates, then restart the system and reconnect the Scanjet 5300 after reboot.

To find a compatible driver for your HP Scanjet 5300 on Windows 7 or Windows 10, you can follow these steps:

    1. Check Windows Compatibility: First, ensure that your Scanjet 5300 is compatible with Windows 7 or Windows 10. You can visit the Windows Vista Compatibility Center to find links to the latest drivers for your device.
    2. Use Built-in Drivers: On your computer, go to Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners. Click on Add a printer or scanner and let Windows search for any supported drivers that may be included in the operating system.
    3. Windows Update: You can also check for drivers through Windows Update. Go to Start > Windows Update and follow the instructions to see if there are any updates available that include drivers for your scanner.
    4. Manufacturer's Website: Visit the HP website to search for drivers specifically for the HP Scanjet 5300. Look for WHQL signed drivers, as these are tested for compatibility and reliability.
    5. Non-WHQL Drivers: If you cannot find a WHQL signed driver, you may search for non-WHQL signed drivers, but be cautious as these may not have been tested for compatibility. You can find these on the HP website or other computer hardware websites.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider reaching out to HP support for further assistance regarding driver availability for your specific operating system.
