Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that your HP Scanjet 5300 is not being detected on Windows 7 or Windows 10, and no compatible driver is found, causing the system to default to your existing Officejet Pro 8715 scanner.
Before proceeding, please confirm whether you have already tried the suggestions provided by the Q&A Assist. To addition, please try to follow these steps:
1, Connect the Scanjet 5300 to the PC using USB, power it on, then open Device Manager, expand Imaging devices or Other devices, and check whether the scanner appears with a warning icon.
- If it appears as an unknown device, right‑click it and select Update driver.
- Choose Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
2, Select Imaging devices, then choose Generic Image Device, and complete the driver installation to test basic Windows image acquisition support.
3, Open Windows Fax and Scan, select New Scan, and check whether the Scanjet 5300 becomes selectable as a source device.
4, If Vuescan is installed, disconnect your Officejet Pro 8715 temporarily, reconnect only the Scanjet 5300, then launch Vuescan and manually select the scanner from the Source dropdown instead of using Auto detect.
5, Open Settings > Printers and scanners, remove the Officejet Pro 8715 temporarily, then select Add a printer or scanner and allow Windows to rescan hardware.
6, Ensure Windows is fully updated by opening Settings > Windows Update and selecting Check for updates, then restart the system and reconnect the Scanjet 5300 after reboot.
