@GuruDevo Per my research, there is no alternate option from Microsoft to replace SharePoint.OpenDocuments add-ons.

Did you want to open documents from SharePoint directly using the Office Application on browsers other than IE?

In my SharePoint 2016 environment, Office 2013, IE, Chrome, and Firefox are installed. I set one library's default open behavior to "Open in the client application". Then I tried to open one document from the library using different browsers(IE, Chrome, Firefox), all browsers call Office application to open the document successfully, below is the detailed result:

    1. When using IE, it will open the document directly using the Office application.
    2. When using Firefox, it firstly showed a warning like the below, click "Choose Application"-> "Office(desktop)"->"Open link", Office application opened the document.
      Firefox:

    3. When using Chrome, it also firstly showed a warning like the below, click "Open office(desktop)", Office application opened the document.
      Chrome:

So, please have a try and let me know the result.

Besides, there is an article about browser support in SharePoint, for your reference:
