If Outlook is not responding, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Install the Latest Updates: Ensure that your Office installation is up to date. You can do this by checking Windows Update settings to install any important, recommended, and optional updates.
    2. Check for Other Processes: Make sure that Outlook isn't being used by another process, which can cause performance issues.
    3. Run Outlook in Safe Mode: You can start Outlook in Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. To do this, press Windows + R, type Outlook /safe, and press Enter. If Outlook works in Safe Mode, the issue may be related to add-ins.
    4. Disable Add-ins: If Outlook works in Safe Mode, try disabling add-ins. Go to File > Options > Add-Ins, select COM Add-ins, and click Go. Uncheck all add-ins and restart Outlook.
    5. Repair Office: You can repair your Office installation through Control Panel by selecting Programs and Features, right-clicking on your Office installation, and choosing Repair.
    6. Repair Outlook Data Files: Use the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) to fix any corrupted Outlook data files. This tool is installed with Outlook and can be found in your Office installation folder.
    7. Check Antivirus Software: Ensure that your antivirus software is up to date, as outdated software can conflict with Outlook.
    8. Create a New Outlook Profile: If the above steps do not resolve the issue, consider creating a new Outlook profile. Go to Control Panel, click on Mail, then Show Profiles, and add a new profile.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.

    Hi Dawn Brewer

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I can see you're unable to access Outlook and it's not responding.

I can see there’s already a Q&A Assist reply under your post. To avoid repeating it, could you tell me whether you’ve tried those steps yet, and what happens when you try?

To let me help you more precisely, could you also share a bit more detail? Such as:

    • Does Outlook freeze completely, or do you see any error messages?
    • What type of account is it: Outlook.com / Exchange / IMAP / POP?
    • Did you recently install Windows updates, especially KB5074109?

Microsoft is tracking some current classic Outlook issues. In particular, they list an investigation where classic Outlook POP profiles may hang/freeze after a Windows 11 update. You can see Classic Outlook profiles with POP accounts and PSTs hang after Windows updates on January 13, 2026 - Microsoft Support

For more details, please refer to the official troubleshooting steps here:

Thank you for your time and understanding. Please feel free to let me know how it goes.
