We are seeing loads of students under 15 that suddenly have Microsoft family enabled on their devices which is blocking our school LMS website. The parents have NOT enabled this, nor does the 'send a code' work when they try this option. We have tried changing log ins, deleting cookies and browser history, downloading other browsers, and nothing is working. This just started this week, and no one has made any changes to our LMS or the parents have NOT made any changes to their parental controls.

    Hi Sara White

I haven't received any updates since your message. Has everything been resolved yet?

    Hi Sara White,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum about the issue you are seeing with Microsoft Family Safety being unexpectedly enabled on student devices. I understand how disruptive this must be for your school, especially since it is blocking access to your LMS website.

Based on what you described, this behavior may be linked to recent updates or automatic policy changes applied through Microsoft accounts associated with the students. In some cases, Family Safety can be activated if a child account is detected, even if parents have not explicitly set it up. This would explain why the “send a code” option is not working and why browser changes have not resolved the issue.

Here are a few steps you can try:

    1. Check Account Type: Verify whether the affected accounts are flagged as child accounts. If so, Family Safety may be automatically applied.
    2. Review Device Settings: On each device, go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users to confirm if Family Safety is listed.
    3. Remove Family Association: If possible, sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/family with the student’s account and check if they are part of a family group. Removing them from the group may resolve the restrictions.

Since this issue began suddenly and across multiple devices, it may be related to a backend change. I recommend escalating this to Microsoft Support directly, as they can investigate whether a recent change is causing Family Safety to be applied automatically to student accounts and provide a resolution.
