I cannot register my new HP laptop to my Microsoft account. The device registration wizard won't recognize the device's serial number, despite repeated attempts. It's been suggested that I rename the laptop, restart the PC, sign back into my Microsoft account, and see if that solves the problem. My old laptop, which I've since deleted from my Microsoft account, showed up with no problem, by the way.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

If you're having difficulty registering your new HP laptop to your Microsoft account and the device registration wizard isn't recognizing the serial number, here are some steps you can take:

    1. Verify the Serial Number: Double-check that you are entering the correct serial number. You can find the serial number by using PowerShell with the following command:
         Get-CimInstance Win32_BaseBoard | Select-Object SerialNumber

    2. Rename Your Laptop: As suggested, try renaming your laptop. Sometimes, changing the device name can help with the registration process.
    3. Restart Your Laptop: After renaming, restart your laptop to refresh the system settings.
    4. Sign Back into Your Microsoft Account: Once your laptop has restarted, sign back into your Microsoft account and attempt the registration again.
    5. Check for Conflicts: Ensure that there are no conflicting entries from your old laptop that might affect the registration of your new device.
    6. Seek Support: If the problem continues, it may be beneficial to contact Microsoft support for specialized assistance regarding your account and device registration issues.

These steps should help you resolve the registration issue with your new HP laptop.

    Hello,

To register your PC with a Microsoft account, sign in to Windows using your Microsoft account, receive the security code, and complete the verification process.

Try switching to a local account once, then sign in again with your Microsoft account, receive the security code, and attempt verification.

However, there has been a long-standing bug where registration may fail. For example, after resetting Windows due to certain issues, registration often becomes impossible.

Please note that the BitLocker recovery key is still backed up correctly.

If registration cannot be completed, please send feedback to Microsoft using the feedback option displayed at the bottom of the Device Management page.
