New ThinkPad Set Up - Locked Out

I was setting up my brand new Lenovo ThinkPad and I walked away and Windows now requires a password for me to enter. I haven't even been able to load me MS Office or do anything. I have tried every password I use and had no luck. What is going on. I now have a brand new lap top that is impossible to use or access. I tried to do a factory reset but it wouldn't even allow me to do this. I would really appreciate any help or advice. Thank you.

    Hi Anneliese Lucido,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that during the initial Windows 11 setup on a new device, the system is requesting a password that you do not recognize and you are unable to access or reset the device.

Before proceeding, please confirm whether you have already tried the suggestions provided by the Q&A Assist. To add to those steps, please try the following:

    1, Force Windows Recovery Environment

    • Power on the device
    • When the Windows logo appears, press and hold the Power button to force shutdown
    • Repeat this process three times until Preparing Automatic Repair appears

2, Start a full reset from recovery

    • On the Automatic Repair screen, select Troubleshoot
    • Select Reset this PC
    • Select Remove everything

    3, Choose local reinstallation

    • When prompted, select Local reinstall
    • Select Just remove my files
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset

    4, Complete Windows setup again

    • After reset, go through the Windows setup process
    • When asked to sign in, carefully note whether Windows requests a Microsoft account or allows local account creation

Disclaimer: The steps above may result in permanent data loss. Please ensure important data is backed up before proceeding.

It sounds like you're experiencing a common issue with Windows requiring a password during the setup process. Here are a few steps you can try to regain access to your Lenovo ThinkPad:

    1. Check for Default Passwords: If this is a new device, sometimes manufacturers have a default password. Check the documentation that came with your laptop.
    2. Use Password Reset Options: If you have a Microsoft account linked to your Windows setup, you can use the password reset feature. Go to the Microsoft account password reset page from another device and follow the instructions.
    3. Boot into Safe Mode: Restart your laptop and repeatedly press the F8 key (or Shift + F8) during boot-up to access the Advanced Boot Options. From there, select Safe Mode and see if you can log in without a password.
    4. Factory Reset: Since you mentioned that you tried a factory reset but it wouldn’t allow you, ensure you are following the correct procedure. You can usually access recovery options by pressing F11 during startup, which should lead you to recovery settings.
    5. Contact Support: If none of the above methods work, it may be best to contact Lenovo support or Microsoft support for further assistance.

These steps should help you troubleshoot the issue and regain access to your laptop.
