I bought a new subscription for Microsoft and it is pointing to my gmail account. I have an existing Microsoft Hotmail account. How do I move the subscription over the existing hotmail/Microsoft account?

I understand how confusing it can be when a new Microsoft 365 subscription is linked to a different email address than the one you’ve been using, and you’d like everything under a single Microsoft account.

At this time, Microsoft does not support merging two Microsoft accounts into one. This means a subscription purchased with a Gmail-based Microsoft account cannot be directly moved or merged into an existing Hotmail or Outlook Microsoft account.

You have two practical options depending on how you want to use the subscription:

Option 1: Continue using the Gmail-based Microsoft account You can keep the subscription on the Gmail-based Microsoft account and sign in to Microsoft 365 services using that account. You can still add your Hotmail address as an alias for email communication, but the subscription ownership will remain with the Gmail account.

Option 2: Cancel and repurchase using the Hotmail account If you want the subscription fully tied to your existing Hotmail Microsoft account, you can cancel the current subscription (if eligible for a refund) and then purchase Microsoft 365 again while signed in to your Hotmail account. This ensures the subscription is associated with the correct account from the start.

About deleting the old Microsoft account:

• If you decide you no longer need the Gmail-based Microsoft account and it does not own any active subscriptions, balances, or important data, you can close it by visiting: How to close your Microsoft account

Before closing an account, make sure:

• There is no active Microsoft 365 subscription on it
• Any OneDrive data, emails, or purchases you want to keep are backed up
• You are comfortable losing access to that account permanently

If the subscription is still active on the Gmail account, you’ll need to cancel or let it expire before closing the account.

To merge an existing Microsoft account with a new one, you typically cannot directly combine two Microsoft accounts. However, you can associate multiple email accounts with your Microsoft account and set one as the primary account. Here’s how you can manage your accounts:

1. Sign in to your Microsoft account using the email associated with your new subscription (the Gmail account).
2. Go to the Microsoft account page and navigate to the section where you can manage your account info.
3. Add your Hotmail account as an alias to your existing Microsoft account. This allows you to use both accounts under one Microsoft account.
4. Set your Hotmail account as primary if you wish to use it more frequently.

Unfortunately, subscriptions cannot be transferred directly between accounts. You may need to cancel the subscription linked to your Gmail account and then re-subscribe using your Hotmail account if you want your subscription to be associated with that account.
