Can't sign in to new MS 365 Business Standard subscription

I signed up and paid for a new Microsoft 365 Business Standard account. Microsoft sent me an email with instructions to sign into admin center.

My new subscriber name ends with " .onmicrosoft.com"

But, when I tried to sign in with the email address (subscriber name) provided by Microsoft, the response is "The username may be incorrect. Make sure you typed it correctly. Otherwise contact your administrator." I am the administrator. This is a new small-business account in the UK. When i try to recover the account, the response is "The email or username you entered does not exist." I am using the email they gave me.

The robot phone service is terrible. Can anyone help with human intervention?

[Windows 11 user. I need the customer email feature for my business - hence going for MS 365 Business option. I currently have a 'personal' MS account using same business IMAP email address (in new Outlook online). I am switching from Office 2013. I did a trial MS 365 in the summer 2025 for 2 weeks. That worked fine, I could access the admin centre.]

    Dear @Alex Nichols ANCL,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.

Thank you so much for sharing all these details and I’m also very sorry for the trouble you’ve had trying to sign in to your new Microsoft 365 Business Standard subscription. I completely understand how stressful this can be when you just want to get started.

From what you described, it sounds very likely that the sign‑in issue is happening because your business email address is already being used as a Microsoft personal account (MSA). Personal accounts and Microsoft 365 Business (work/school) accounts live in two separate systems, and when both exist with the same email address, the sign‑in page can mistakenly redirect you to the personal account and show errors like “This username may be incorrect” or “This account does not exist.”

Your new onmicrosoft.com admin account should work, but the system may not be sending you to the correct place, this is a common situation with brand‑new small‑business subscriptions.

A couple of gentle things you can try, just to rule out the usual causes:

Open a private/incognito browser window and sign in using the exact username shown in Microsoft’s email (including @tenantname.onmicrosoft.com).

You can also try going directly to work‑account sign‑in path: https://admin.microsoft.com

If the system still says the username doesn’t exist, please don’t worry, this normally means the backend identity for your tenant needs to be checked or completed by Microsoft Support. As community moderators, I don’t have access to your tenant’s backend provisioning details, so the best next step is to contact Microsoft Business Support so a support agent can look into your subscription directly and make sure your admin account is fully created.

Please try to find the related hotline number to call the frontline let them raise a ticket for you: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

In some countries, this is an automated conversation: First, when you call the hotline, they will ask you what kind of problem you are struggling with.

    Answer: Authenticator.

A: What products do you use?

    B: Office 365 for business.

    Verification: Education or company account?

    B: For companies

    A: Are you an administrator?

    B: Yes.

A: Are there any other administrators in your organization?

    B: No.

A: I need one.... Service request?

    B: Yes

If your organization's Office 365 Business subscription is from a partner or reseller, and the global administrator is unable to open a service request on your end, contact the reseller's support provider to help open a service request on behalf of you instead.

If you still cannot reach to agent, there is still a workaround, you might consider registering for a new tenant by signing up for a trial subscription via this link Compare All Microsoft 365 Plans | Microsoft. This would allow you to create a new tenant following the provided prompts. Once set up, you can access the admin console of the new tenant and submit a support ticket requesting to speak with the Data Protection team on behalf of your previous tenant.

Please remember to cancel the trial subscription once your issue is resolved to avoid any unintended charges.

I understand that this entire process can feel long and complicated, and I truly appreciate your patience while working through it. These steps are in place to protect the security of your account, so I hope you can understand why they are required. I sincerely hope you’ll be able to regain access to your account soon. If you need help at any point, or if you have any questions during the process, please feel free to reach out, I’m always here and happy to assist.

Thank you again for your understanding and patience.

    Warm regards,
