It does not happen often but at times the photos I have in storage are much smaller and have

a large black border filling most of the space where the original photo was. How to return

them back to normal size?

Are you viewing these photos in the Windows Photos app, OneDrive online, or another program? Also, does the file size change when the photo looks smaller?

This usually happens when the photo is being displayed with the wrong zoom, aspect ratio, or resolution, or when the viewing app falls back to a preview instead of the original file. If you are using the Windows Photos app, open the photo and select Zoom to fit or Actual size. You can also try resetting the Photos app settings, which often fixes display glitches. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/get-help-with-microsoft-photos-app-702104c6-7541-6757-d624-c0846b3bdbd3.

If these photos are stored in OneDrive, make sure you are opening the original file and not a thumbnail or preview. Sync issues can cause OneDrive to show a low resolution version with black borders until it fully downloads. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/fix-onedrive-sync-problems-0899b115-05f7-45ec-95b2-e4cc8c4670b2.

To return your photos to their normal size, you can use the following methods depending on how you are viewing or editing the images:

    1. Using an Image Editor: If you are using an image editor, you can resize the image back to its original dimensions. You can select the entire image and use the sizing handles to drag it back to the desired size. Alternatively, you can enter the original dimensions in the Properties window of the image editor.
    2. Using Image Resizer Utility: If you have the PowerToys Image Resizer utility installed, you can right-click on the image file in File Explorer, select Resize with ImageResizer, and choose a preset size that matches the original dimensions of your photo. This tool allows you to quickly resize multiple images at once.
    3. Adjusting SizeMode in PictureBox: If you are displaying images in a Windows Forms application, ensure that the SizeMode property of the PictureBox is set correctly. You can set it to Zoom or Stretch to adjust how the image fits within the control borders.

These methods should help you restore your photos to their original size without the large black borders.
