I don't understand why all of a sudden I cannot save my Excel documents. The save option is greyed out. I wondered whether my 365 license had expired, but I can still save my Word documents under the same license. When I click About Excel, my license is under a different email address than the one I use to access the MS community. I don't know how to find my license expiration date.

    Hi @Laurence Hauben

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on the information you described, I understand that you are suddenly unable to save Excel documents because the Save option is greyed out. You initially suspected that your Microsoft 365 license might have expired; however, you are still able to save and edit Word documents under the same installation. Additionally, when checking About Excel, you noticed that Excel is licensed under a different email address.

Since Word is working normally while Excel is not, this issue may be caused by the device being signed in with multiple Microsoft accounts, and Excel is currently associated with an account that does not have an active license.

To troubleshoot this, I recommend the following steps:

-Verify which account has an active license: Please verify which account still has an active subscription.

-Remove existing Office license files on your Mac: Once you have identified the correct licensed account, please follow Microsoft’s official documentation to remove Office license files on a Mac. This helps clear cached credentials and resolves account conflicts between Office apps. After removing the license files, restart your Mac, then open an Office app and sign in again using the account that has the active Microsoft 365 license.

I hope this information helps resolve the issue. If you need further assistance, please let me know, and feel free to share any additional details.

There could be several reasons why you are unable to save your Excel documents, especially if the save option is greyed out. Here are some potential causes and solutions:

    1. Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to save files in the folder you are trying to use. You need both read and write permissions.
    2. Disk Space: Check if there is sufficient disk space available on the drive where you are trying to save the file. If the disk is full, you will not be able to save the document.
    3. Antivirus Software: Sometimes, antivirus software can interfere with the saving process. Try temporarily disabling your antivirus to see if it resolves the issue.
    4. File Sharing: If you are working on a shared workbook with another user, the save option may be greyed out if the other user is currently saving the file.
    5. Excel Safe Mode: You can try starting Excel in Safe Mode to see if a third-party add-in is causing the issue. To do this, exit Excel, then hold down the Ctrl key while starting Excel again. If you can save in Safe Mode, a third-party add-in might be the culprit.
    6. File Naming: Ensure that the file name and path do not exceed 218 characters, as this can also prevent saving.

If you suspect that your license might be an issue, you can check your Microsoft 365 subscription status through your Microsoft account online. Since you mentioned that you can still save Word documents, it is less likely that the license is the problem.
