Can't log into authenticator or get an authentication code.

Question

when I try to sign in to the authenticator app on my mobile phone it asks me to enter a code from the authenticator app on my mobile phone. that's impossible. I try to "sign in another way" and my options are to approve a request on my authenticator app (can't do that bc can't log in) or to use a verification code from the app ( can't do that either). I am in a loop & can't figure this out. . . .
