Hello sandra haynes,
Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum!
I understand that you have confusion when using suddenly see “subscription cancelled” or “Unlicensed Product” when opening Excel but don’t worry. That's very understandable and believe me you're not alone. I am here to help you out.
My suggestion for you:
1. Check if your Microsoft 365 subscription is active
Your first step is to verify whether your subscription is still valid. Here is how to check:
Go to your Microsoft account Services & Subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services
Sign in using the same Microsoft account you used to purchase Microsoft 365.
Look under Subscriptions:
- If you see Expires on [date], it has expired.
- If you see Recurring billing, then the subscription should be active.
If your subscription has expired, you’ll need to renew it. If it’s active but Excel still shows Unlicensed, continue below.
2. Fix Excel showing “Unlicensed Product”
Excel may appear unlicensed even if your subscription is still active. This can happen due to sign‑in issues, expired payment methods, or activation glitches.
Step A: Make sure payment information is up to date
If payment failed (expired card, billing issue), the subscription can be suspended.
Step B: Run the Microsoft 365 Activation Troubleshooter (Windows)
This tool automatically detects and fixes activation problems. Run it here: https://aka.ms/SARA-OfficeActivation-OF
Step C: Sign out of Office apps and sign back in
A simple sign‑out/sign‑in often resolves licensing errors.
- Close all Office apps (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
- Reopen Excel
- When prompted, sign in with the account tied to your subscription
Step D: Check for multiple Office installations
If more than one copy of Office is installed, activation may fail.
- Open Control Panel > Programs and Features
- Search for Office
- Uninstall any older or duplicate versions
- Restart your PC
Step E: Renew the subscription if expired
If the subscription really has expired, you can renew it by:
- Entering a product key
- Turning on recurring billing
3. If the message said your subscription was cancelled
This usually happens when:
- Payment failed
- You accidentally turned off recurring billing
- Microsoft had trouble verifying your subscription
Check the subscription status again and re‑activate it by signing in. If needed, renew the subscription or update payment details.
I hope this will help with your situation. Please feel free to reach back if you have further update or more questions.
Best Regards,
