Hey All, I am posting here because I am out of options with my brand new Surface Laptop purchased just a few months ago and the Microsoft Support process has been incredibly disappointing and frustrating. I am at the point of returning the laptop however I'd prefer not to as I have spent so long setting up all my work on it so I wanted to try my luck here.

Main Issue - Docking and Undocking Crashes the laptop

My Surface Laptop 7th Edition (Windows 11 Home, fully updated) consistently freezes 10 to 30 minutes after docking or undocking, depending on which state it started in. It slows down, becomes unusable, and then completely freezes until I perform a hard reset.

I have tested two different docking stations and the issue happens with both. All drivers and firmware are fully updated, both by me beforehand and again during the support call.

An important detail: If I hard reset while docked, the laptop works fine all day while docked as the session has started docked. But as soon as I undock, the freezing returns. The same happens in reverse if I start undocked, it works fine until I dock it.

This behaviour has cost me a significant amount of time and productivity.

Support Experience - 0 / 10 (literally)

I have tried to the online channels submitting a support ticket (no response) I then tried to call and get help through Microsoft Support, but the experience has been extremely poor.

First call: Everything seemed fine and nice, I spent over an hour with an agent getting upto the point of updating drivers and downloading the Windows ISO mentioning I'd get a call back if anything happens. We reached the point of repairing Windows when the call suddenly disconnected. No callback, even though they had all my details. I tried to call back many times however the automated MS call system just kept sending me to the online channels and ending the call.

Next day: I called again, managed to get through (relief) explained what happened during the first call, and politely asked the agent to stay with me through the process. They hung up on me again (literally couldn't believe it)

Since then: the support line redirects me to online help and disconnects. The Surface app never assigns an agent. I currently have no way to reach a human.

Looking for Help

Has anyone experienced this docking or undocking freezing issue?

Does anyone know how I can reach a human agent again without being hung up on?

How do I escalate or lodge a formal complaint about the support experience I did have as that's terrible for MS. I can provide (with an official ofcourse) my number and email so they can track who I was speaking to.

Thanks, and apologies if I sound frustrated. I have genuinely tried every official channel first and thought I'd try my luck here before I return the laptop.

I understand how frustrating this must be. The freeze pattern during docking and undocking is unusual but has appeared in some Surface cases where display handoff or power transitions go wrong. Since you've already updated firmware, drivers, and tested multiple docks, a few deeper checks might help:

Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit: it can catch firmware mismatches that Windows Update misses.

Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to completely remove Graphic card driver, then reinstall from the Surface support site rather than Windows Update.

Open Event Viewer: Check Event Viewer for Kernel-Power, Display, or ACPI errors around the freeze time to see whether GPU, USB, or power management is failing.

Test with only power and one monitor connected to eliminate peripheral interference.

Open a service request directly through the Surface Support Portal for a trackable case ID. Microsoft Support on X handle often responds quickly if you share your case ID and summary.

    To reach via X:

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with your Surface Laptop freezing during docking and undocking. Here are some steps you might consider to troubleshoot the problem:

    1. Update Drivers and Firmware: Ensure that all drivers and firmware are up to date. You can check the Surface update history for the latest updates.
    2. Test Different Docking Stations: Since you've already tested two different docking stations, ensure that they are compatible with your Surface Laptop. Sometimes, specific models may have known issues.
    3. Check Power Settings: Adjust your power settings to see if it affects the freezing issue. Sometimes, settings related to sleep or hibernation can cause problems when docking and undocking.
    4. Use the Surface Support Portal: Since you've had a challenging experience with support, consider using the Surface Support Portal to create a service request or track the status of your device repairs.
    5. Contact Support Again: If you need to escalate your support experience, try reaching out through the Surface Support Portal or consider using social media channels to get in touch with Microsoft support, as they may respond quicker.
    6. Community Forums: You might also find help in community forums where other users may have experienced similar issues and can share their solutions.

If the problem persists, and you feel that the device is not functioning as expected, returning it may be a viable option, especially if it affects your productivity significantly.
