Why does Microsoft want to send a security code to a phone number that is not associated with my account?

It happens when using a mobile phone trying to access my files through Excel that are on One Drive. It denies my password, which I assure you is correct, I even changed it on my desktop to make sure I'm using the correct one. Then when trying "another way" it asks for the phone number that is incorrect.

If you can access your account, then theoretically you should also be able to access your own files. Did you also try to use a computer?

I am not able to open Excel after loading the app on another phone. There is no problem on 3 other devices. It won't accept my password, which I know is correct, and then goes to trying to send a code to a phone number that is incorrect.

Hello

When you said the correct number is listed in your account, are you referring to https://account.live.com > Your info > Sign in preference, if so, this list is alias/username, not security contact information.

To see where the code is sent to, you need to go to Security > Manage how I sign in. Make sure your phone number is listed there.

I have already done what has been suggested before I sent this question. The number that I have in the Manage how I sign in is correct. As I stated, Microsoft is only providing a security code to a phone number that is not associated with my account.

Any chance this is when you tried to log into Sharepoint link shared with you, or meeting where you were invited by some organization user?

Can you do this on the computer -

Go to www.onedrive.com, sign into your account, tell me if you can locate this Excel file in your OneDrive?

I can access the file on three other devices, desktop, tablet and my phone. I created it for my wife to use on her phone. I downloaded Excel on her phone so she could use the file, but Excel won't accept my password on her phone and then tries to send a code to a phone number that I don't have.

She doesn't have her own account. I do all of this for her. So there is no other phone number or password.

Can you verify what account is exactly being used on the phone in Word, and OneDrive on the phone?

Doyou have the OneDrive app installed on the phone, or did you just send the share link and try to open it as a link for the file ?

OneDrive is installed, but when I just tried to open that app on her phone, it won't accept my password on that app either.

On her phone, can you launch a web browser in incognito mode, then go to www.onedrive.com. Can you log in there?

Oh no. You are going to wish you had never started with me on this thread. All this time I was including a dot in between my first and last name for my outlook ID. There is a dot there for a business account that someone else set up for an outlook ID for me, but for my personal account there isn't one. There must be someone else with my name that includes the dot that also has a different phone number. When I removed the dot all my problems went away. Sorry for taking up so much of your time for a really airhead stupid kind of mistake.

No worries at all. I did believe you were on a wrong account, hence I wanted to try the web on the phone first. I was thinking of having you clear the credential cache on the phone next but glad you sorted it.
