A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Hi @DENECE LUCY I.,
Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.
Based on the details you shared that your Word document did not sync consistently between your university computer and iPad, which resulted in one set of edits overwriting the other when you reopened and shared the file. I truly understand your concern about potentially losing your most recent iPad edits, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain the sequence of events and the troubleshooting you have already attempted.
This usually happens when the document is not being opened from the exact same OneDrive location on both devices, or when one device edits an offline or cached copy and then uploads later. Additionally, if AutoSave or OneDrive sync is paused, delayed, or signed into a different account on either device, Word may treat the file as separate versions that later compete when syncing resumes. As a result, the latest upload can become the main version, which can make earlier edits appear to disappear even though they may still be recoverable.
Please follow these steps in order to recover your latest iPad edits and prevent repeat overwrites
1/ Confirm both devices are using the same account and the same OneDrive file location
- On the university computer, open the document and go to File > Account to verify the signed in school email address.
- Then go to File > Info and confirm the file location shows OneDrive rather than a local device folder or a different storage location.
- On the iPad, open Word, tap your profile icon to verify the signed in email address, and open the file directly from OneDrive within Word instead of opening it only from Recents.
2/ Use OneDrive Version History to restore the version that contains your iPad edits
- In a browser, sign in to OneDrive on the web, locate the document, and select it.
- Choose Version history, then review versions around the time you edited on the iPad and the time the computer version replaced it.
- Open the most relevant version to confirm your missing edits are present, and then select Restore.
- For safety, you can also download that version before restoring so you keep a separate backup copy.
3/ Look for conflict copies or recovered drafts that may contain the missing content
- In OneDrive, check the same folder for additional files with names such as “conflicted copy”, “copy”, or duplicates that include a number.
- On the iPad, in Word, check Open and Recent for any recovered or cached version that still includes your latest edits.
- If you find a file that contains the iPad changes, immediately choose Save a Copy to OneDrive with a new name, for example [DocumentName]_iPadEdits, before continuing to edit.
4/ Stabilize syncing going forward to prevent future overrides
- Ensure AutoSave is turned on for this document and confirm the file is saved to OneDrive rather than local storage.
- Before switching devices, close the document and allow a moment for syncing to complete, then reopen it on the other device only after OneDrive indicates it is up to date.
- Avoid editing the same document on both devices at the same time until you see the latest changes appear on OneDrive.
- If this is a university managed account, confirm you are not switching between a personal OneDrive and a university OneDrive, because that commonly creates two files with the same name in different locations.
5/ Contact IT administrator:
Since your account is managed by your university, please contact your IT administrator to review your permissions and policies. If the issue persists after these checks, ask your IT administrator to submit a support request directly to Microsoft Support team.
