My computer has locked up. It shows a number to call, but I think it is spam. How can I get help to fix this?

If that notification is in a web browser, well done for being suspicious, you would be amazed how many users fall for this!

This is a well known Tech Support Scam, your PC is not infected, do not click anything on that page and do not phone any number on that page.

When this happens, open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)

On the processes tab, locate your browser and end task on that

You can then continue to user your PC and browse the Internet

This is caused by a browser re-direct on a page you are visiting, try to avoid any page that jumps out to this sort of page.

If your computer has locked up and is displaying a number to call, it is likely a tech support scam. Microsoft does not include phone numbers in their error messages. Here are some steps you can take to resolve the issue:

    1. Restart Your Computer: This can often resolve temporary lock-ups. You can do this by holding down the power button until the computer turns off, then turning it back on.
    2. Close the Browser: If the lock-up is due to a browser issue, you can try pressing Alt + F4 to close the window or Ctrl + Shift + Escape to open Task Manager and end the browser process.
    3. Clear Browser Cache: After restarting, clear your browser's cache to prevent similar issues in the future.
    4. Install an Adblocker: To minimize the likelihood of encountering such scams again, consider installing an adblocker in your browser.
    5. Avoid Calling the Number: Do not call the number provided in the pop-up, as it is likely a scam.
