Why doesn't Microsoft support Windows 11 upgrade for laptop with Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz 2.90 GHz Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable) Storage 954 GB SSD SAMSUNG MZVLW1T0HMLH-000L2 Graphics Card? The TPM spec is 2

My PC health check says windows 11 upgrade is not possible.

After studying the issues, I checked the TPM spec and it is 2.0, which should be fine.

With W10 support ending, why does MS not support this upgrade?

Is there a way to have MS support this upgrade to W11?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello, I'm Quinn and here to help!

The previous answers are correct. I understand why this feels confusing and frustrating, especially since the Intel Core i7-7500U is still a capable processor and the system meets other requirements like TPM 2.0, RAM, and storage.

However, Windows 11 support is not based on performance alone. The i7-7500U is a 7th-generation (Kaby Lake) CPU, which falls outside Microsoft’s officially supported processor list. For Intel systems, Windows 11 support generally begins with 8th-generation CPUs and newer, regardless of how well older processors perform in real-world use. Microsoft has explained that this cutoff is tied to security, reliability, and long-term supportability, rather than raw speed. As a result, even capable systems may be excluded.

Unfortunately, there is no supported way to upgrade this PC to Windows 11. Microsoft does not provide any supported method to install Windows 11 on a device with an unsupported CPU. There are unofficial workarounds (registry edits, modified installers), but:

The device will be marked as unsupported

You may not receive all updates

Microsoft will not provide support for issues on that system

Microsoft documents this explicitly: installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware is at your own risk.

The issue is not the speed or power of the processor. Rather, it is the instruction set. This includes features involving memory integrity enforcement and virtualization for example.

This makes absolutely no sense. MS should revise their support for such processors that are plenty fast with excellent hardware platform.

Otherwise, they should continue to support windows 10.

Your Intel Core i7-7500U CPU, while capable, is not on Microsoft's list of supported processors for Windows 11. Microsoft has set specific hardware requirements for Windows 11, which include:

    1. Processor: Must be 1 GHz or faster with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor. Specifically, Microsoft only supports Intel processors from the 8th generation (Coffee Lake) and newer for Windows 11. The i7-7500U is a 7th generation (Kaby Lake) processor, which is why your upgrade is not supported.
    2. TPM: You mentioned that your system has TPM 2.0, which is a requirement for Windows 11. However, having TPM 2.0 alone does not guarantee compatibility if the CPU is not supported.
    3. Other Requirements: Windows 11 also requires a minimum of 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, a DirectX 12 compatible graphics card, and UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability. Your system meets these requirements, but the CPU is the limiting factor.

Since your device does not meet the CPU requirement, there is no official way to bypass this restriction for the Windows 11 upgrade. Microsoft has implemented these specifications to ensure that devices running Windows 11 can provide the best performance and security.

If you want to use Windows 11, you may need to consider upgrading your hardware to a newer device that meets the minimum requirements. Until then, you can continue using Windows 10, which will receive support until its end of life, allowing you to use your current setup without immediate concerns.
