Hi, to anyone out there that knows, I'm been having an issue with my Microsoft teams LIVE: tag. It shows some offensive name tag and the support is claiming that that was from a recent skype merge. I haven't been able to use or get callbacks with my account for over a decade now. I did start a new account but it looks like someone populated the hacked info one my new account recently. How can we fix this?

    Hi Joseph Dauer,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, the “LIVE:” line is your legacy Skype Name (Skype ID) that’s permanently tied to your Microsoft account and can’t be changed. In Teams, that live:… string is typically visible only to you in the account view; other people mainly see your display name. Since May 5, 2025, Skype was retired and consumer data/sign‑in moved to Teams (Free), which is why this label can appear more prominently in account info. To change what others see, update your Microsoft account display name; it can take up to 24 hours to sync everywhere.

Reference: Skype is retiring in May 2025: What you need to know

You could consider trying the following steps

    1. Update your public “Display name” (the name others see):

    • Go to account.microsoft.com > Your info > Edit name, update First/Last name > Save, then sign out/in of Teams.
    • Allow up to 24 hours for full propagation across services.

    2. Review your Skype/Teams profile fields:

    • Open your Profile and update or remove any visible fields (e.g., Display name/About) that might still carry legacy or inappropriate text.

    3. Verify in Teams

    • Open Teams > click your avatar >confirm the new display name in chats/meetings. If it has not changed yet, wait for directory sync to complete from Step 1. (Reminder: the live: identifier is a fixed system ID and does not control the display name.)

    4. If you suspect the account was ever compromised:

    • Run Microsoft’s hacked/compromised account flow: reset to a strong, unique password, review recent sign‑ins, and enable two‑step verification (MFA).

    5. If you absolutely need an account with no “live:” label at all:

    • Because Skype and Microsoft identities cannot be unlinked or merged, the only way to avoid a legacy live: string is to create a new Microsoft account (with different email/phone) and use that for Teams.

To address the issue with your Microsoft Teams LIVE: tag showing an offensive name, you may need to take the following steps:

    1. Check Account Settings: Ensure that your account settings are correct and that your profile information is updated. If the offensive name is linked to your profile, you can change it in the Teams settings.
    2. Contact Microsoft Support: Since you mentioned that support has already been contacted, it may be beneficial to follow up with them, providing them with all relevant details about your account and the issue. They may be able to assist in clearing any incorrect information that has been merged from Skype.
    3. Account Recovery: If you believe your account has been compromised, consider going through the account recovery process. This may involve resetting your password and verifying your identity to regain control of your account.
    4. Create a New Account: If the issue persists and you cannot resolve it, creating a new account might be the best option. However, ensure that you secure this new account with a strong password and enable two-factor authentication to prevent future issues.
    5. Report Offensive Content: If the name is offensive and violates community standards, report it to Microsoft through the appropriate channels so they can take action.

If you continue to face difficulties, it may be worth exploring the Microsoft Teams support documentation for further troubleshooting steps.
