When I try to establish a new contact list, I am asked to enter a name but the response I receive is that the name can't be found. It doesn't matter what name i enter it cannot be found.

I have not had a problem before, what may have changed?

Try entering the contact info of the person instead of the person's name.

For instance, find the person's email address and type it in instead of their name.

"Name not found" is usually the error you get from trying to add a new contact to an existing list. The New List dialog will take just about anything for the name of the list.

    Are you following these instructions?
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/create-edit-or-delete-a-contact-list-or-contact-group-in-outlook-88ff6c60-0a1d-4b54-8c9d-9e1a71bc3023

    And it looks like this?

    User's image

And the [+ Add] button is disabled and this is the error you are seeing?

If not, Please see this Microsoft Support article and reply with what platform (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS) and version of Outlook you are using.

Or if you access Outlook On the Web using a browser: What platform (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS) and browser (Chrome, Edge. Safari, Firefox) you are using.

    Try using Outlook Web

Try creating your new Contact List using Outlook Web instead of New Outlook for Windows. Sometimes this will work when the Windows App won't.

    Hello Peter Zillman,

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Q&A. I am very sorry to hear that you are unable to establish a new contact list. I understand how frustrating it is when a standard feature you rely on suddenly stops working, especially when the error message stating the name "can't be found" is confusing since you are trying to create a new group, not search for one.

Please try these technical steps to fix the underlying address book connection

Step 1: Force Update the Offline Address Book

If Outlook's local database is outdated, it may fail to validate any new entry, even a new list name.

    1. Go to the Send / Receive tab in the top ribbon.
    2. Click on Send/Receive Groups (drop-down menu).
    3. Select Download Address Book.
    4. Uncheck "Download changes since last Send/Receive" (to force a full reload). Click OK.
      • Nore: Allow 2-5 minutes for this to complete, then restart Outlook and try creating the list again.

Step 2: Create the List via the "People" View

Sometimes the "Mail" view shortcut is corrupted. Trying from the dedicated Contacts screen often bypasses the glitch.

    1. Click the People / Contacts icon (bottom left or left rail).
    2. Click New Contact Group in the top ribbon.
    3. Name: Type the name here first.
    4. Add Members: Only click this after the name is typed. Select "From Address Book" and add a test contact.
    5. Click Save & Close.

Step 3: Test on Outlook Web

To verify if this is a software corruption on your PC or an account issue:

    • Log in to outlook.live.com
    • Go to People > New contact list.
    • Result: If it works here, your desktop Outlook profile is corrupted. If it fails here too, there is a server-side permission issue with your account.

Finally, when you are creating the list, ensure you are typing the name of the list in the top "Name" field. Sometimes, if the cursor jumps to the "Add Members" or search bar automatically, and you type the intended list name there, Outlook will try to find a person with that name to add to the list—resulting in "Name can't be found."

I sincerely hope that updating the address book resolves this error and allows you to organize your contacts again. Please let me know if you need further assistance or if there are any other details I can clarify for you.
