Laptop randomly crashes and i cant figure it out.

Hello everyone. So my friends laptop has been crashing at random times and i have no idea what to do. We've tried a bios update, drivers update from the manufacturer, ddu uninstall, sfc /scannow, DISM commands, temps look good (80-90 degrees) scanned the ssd with chkdsk, crystal mark info reports good. I have no other idea on what to do. Event viewer bugcheck codes are all over the place, i have minidumps and whilst looking at them some say this is very common and others are saying like this is serious etc etc.. If someone could help me with this ill be very thankful.

From what I can see this appears to be a hardware issue not a MS issue.

Legion 5 models suffer from faulty RAM or unstable memory, failing or unstable power delivery and GPU instability when switching between iGPU/dGPU.

Recommended next steps are to run MemTest86 via a USB, run multiple passes if it finds an error its likely the RAM is the cause. You can find the USB boot version here;

You can physically troubleshoot the device too by checking if it crashes while plugged in it could be a power brick issue, if it crashes on battery it could be a power bank issue. If it crashes on both its likely to be the ram.

You can use HWiNFO SMART for a more in depth assessment of the SSD's that CrystalDiskInfo might have missed, link below;

Finally reset BIOS to default, disable fast boot and any performance options.

Thing is i dont have a usb so im testing the ram with OCCT for now. Checked the drive its good. Laptop crashes plugged in and plugged out. Ill reset the bios after the test and drop a comment on the results. Thanks for your reply.

I checked ram using OCCT. No problems there. Abt the power adapter i guess it could be faulty. Might need to replace it.

Is it just shutting down like loosing power or properly crashing?

If it is just cutting out it could be a power issue.

If your experiencing Black screens Driver resets Flickering Games crashing on launch HDMI/DisplayPort not waking properly then best to try changing the Hybrid GPU settings;

Lenovo Vantage → Hybrid Mode → Off (dGPU only)

If its not that I would try update the BIOS to the latest version and disable fast boot and any performance options.

The Legion 5 tends to suffer from a lot of RAM issues so if you have a spare stick I would swap them out and see if it changes anything to totally rule it out.

Sometimes itll BSoD sometimes it just dies out completely. My friend doesnt use a second monitor its the laptop screen drivers were reinstalled no problems there. I mentioned upgrading the bios so that isnt the problem. My friend doesnt even have lenovo vantage. I dont have spare ram sadly. I ran a ram test though it came back fine.

To be honest you have done all the right stuff to try and troubleshoot the issue.

OCCT will miss RAM faults, if you can borrow or buy a USB to run MEMTEST86 I would do so.

Its leaning towards a power issue again could be the battery, charger or worst case scenario but rare the motherboard.

Even without Lenovo vantage you can use the BIOS to change the GPU settings

Hybrid Mode / Switchable Graphics

Discrete Graphics Only

Upgrading the BIOS might not do the trick either I would still recommend resetting the BIOS and disabling Fast Boot.

If you can keep it running log enough to run Windows Reliability Monitor and see what that comes back with.

Even buy a cheap SSD remove the current one and reinstall windows to rule out any corruption.

But your are getting towards the end of what you can do and may have to consider taking it to a repair shop as it seems like a hardware issue.

Ill reset the bios to default and ill change the graphics. Ill tell my friend to do a mem test too. If anything full windows reinstall. Doubt a repair shop'll be able to do anything honestly. If its the motherboard the whole laptop is gone pretty much

I agree with the other guy that Unfortunately... it's probably a Hardware issue.... HOWEVER One of My BEST friends had an issue at one point with his Gaming Laptop, EXACTLY like this, if all else fails you might possibly need to get a new copy of Windows that's what ended up fixing his problem, but that's if ALL ELSE FAILS, so as a last resort, because trust me new copies of Windows are EXPENSIVE (even though I'm SURE you know lol)💸💀💸(Unless you get a cheap OEM key, only catch is though, that it's PERFECTLY LEGAL, It's just that Microsoft doesn't Support them if something goes wrong, but it's USUALLY worth it.)

Windows keys arent a problem iykyk so we might just end up uninstalling windows. That is an old old install too so..
