    Hi @Jacinta Clarke,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum.

When a business mailbox shows the wrong display name and also stops receiving email, it usually points to an issue in your Azure Active Directory / Microsoft 365 admin settings, not a personal account problem.

In a business environment, your display name, aliases, and mailbox routing are all controlled by your Microsoft 365 organization’s admin center. If your emails show a different person's name, it usually means one of the following happened:

    • Your display name was changed in Azure AD by mistake.
    • Your mailbox was merged with another user or assigned the wrong identity.
    • Your username / UPN was edited, causing mail to mis-route.
    • An admin renamed or reassigned your mailbox accidentally.
    • Your account may have been part of a security incident, especially if changes appear without your knowledge.
    • Email delivery may be blocked by a mail flow rule, alias conflict, or directory sync issue.

Because you also said you are not receiving email, this strongly suggests the issue is happening at the organization/IT‑admin level  not on your device.

You should begin by contacting your organization’s IT administrator, as they have the ability to correct issues within the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Ask them to verify your Display Name by navigating to: Admin Center > Users > Active Users > Your Name > Edit Display Name. This ensures your account is not incorrectly labeled.

Next, request that they confirm your Primary Email Address (UPN). This should accurately match your real username and must not display anything like the username you mentioned. If it does, they will need to correct it. You should also have them review your aliases (also called proxy addresses) to ensure no unwanted or unfamiliar addresses are linked to your mailbox. In some cases, incorrect aliases can cause mail delivery issues or identity mismatches.

Your IT administrator should also check for any mail flow rules that may be affecting your account. These rules could be forwarding your mail to another recipient, blocking incoming messages entirely, or even modifying the sender information on outgoing mail. They should remove or correct any rules that interfere with your email delivery.

Additionally, ask IT to confirm mailbox ownership. It’s possible especially in business environments that a mailbox may have been reassigned, renamed, or merged with another user’s profile by mistake. Ensuring your mailbox is associated with your correct account is essential for email to work properly.

You should also request a security review to rule out account compromise. Ask IT to check your recent sign‑ins, Conditional Access logs, and any directory changes. If someone else gained access to your account, they could have altered your display name, forwarding rules, or login details, which would explain both the wrong sender name and missing emails.

Finally, if your organization uses on‑premises Active Directory with directory synchronization, the incorrect name may be coming from your local AD rather than Microsoft 365 itself. In that case, IT must update your name in On‑Prem Active Directory, then run the following command on the server to push the correction to the cloud:

    Start-ADSyncSyncCycle -PolicyType Delta

This forces Azure AD to refresh your account’s identity information and should correct the name and email issues once synchronization completes.

I hope this provides enough clarity and helps you stay inform with your current situation.
