I recently purchased a domain name that the previous owner had connected to Microsoft. Godaddy is telling me that I need to contact you to defederate the domain name so I can use it.

Yeah this is a pretty common issue when buying domains that were previously used with Microsoft 365. The domain is still tied to the previous owner's tenant and GoDaddy can't do anything about it on their end.

Good news is you don't need a full migration or anything complex here. You just need Microsoft to defederate the domain from the old tenant so you can use it fresh. We actually put together a complete guide and video that walks through exactly this scenario.

Check out the FAQ here: https://mstack360.com/godaddy-de-federation-from-microsoft-365-your-complete-faq-guide/

And if you want the full walkthrough, the video covers the entire process: https://youtu.be/K7hIjTW-_Tc

Basically you'll need to prove domain ownership to Microsoft (which you already have through GoDaddy) and they'll disconnect it from the previous owner's tenant. Usually takes a few days once you submit the request.

    Dear @randy,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum. I am happy to assist you.

To better understand your situation and provide the correct guidance, may I kindly ask for a few additional details about the domain you recently purchased? This information will help determine why the domain is still associated with a previous Microsoft 365 tenant and what steps are required to release it.

Could you please confirm the following:

    • Has the domain already been fully transferred to your registrar account (GoDaddy) so that you are now the verified owner?
    • What exact error message or code do you receive when you try to add the domain to Microsoft 365 or your hosting service?
    • Did GoDaddy specifically inform you that the domain is still connected to a previous Microsoft 365 tenant and must be defederated? If so, could you share the exact wording of their message?
    • When did you complete the domain purchase?

Providing these details will enable me to offer the most accurate next steps and, if necessary, route your request to the appropriate team for further assistance. Looking forward to your response so we can assist you further!
