Getting an operation failed error when using auto-complete to send emails.

Hit New Email, then To, then Select any email from list (Auto-Complete?), then Double Click on the email address, then click OK. It does not send but I get a Microsoft Outlook dialog box, with a yellow triangle and a black exclamation inside, stating:

The operation failed. The messaging interfaces have returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook. Cannot resolve recipient.

When I then add the email address manually (or Autofill?) it sends

    Hi,

The contact list appears to be corrupt seeing the error message.

    1. Open the group, click Forward, and select Internet format. This creates a new message containing the members as a text file.
    2. Select the entire list of addresses and copy it to the clipboard.
    3. Follow the steps in the referenced article to add these addresses to a new contact group. https://www.slipstick.com/tutorial/how-to-create-a-distribution-list-from-a-list-of-addresses/#create
    4. Save the group with a new name, then test by sending an email.

The error message you are seeing, "The operation failed. The messaging interfaces have returned an unknown error," when using the AutoComplete feature in Outlook can be attributed to issues with the Outlook nickname cache or the Offline Address Book. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:

    1. Clear the AutoComplete List: If there are corrupted entries in the AutoComplete cache, clearing it may resolve the issue. You can do this by navigating to File > Options > Mail and selecting Empty AutoComplete List.
    2. Verify AutoComplete is Enabled: Ensure that the AutoComplete feature is activated. Check this by going to File > Options > Mail and confirming that the option for using the AutoComplete list is checked.
    3. Restart Outlook: Sometimes, simply restarting the application can clear up temporary glitches.
    4. Manually Enter the Email Address: As you noted, manually entering the email address allows you to send the email successfully, indicating that the issue is specifically with the AutoComplete functionality.

If these steps do not resolve the problem, consider creating a new Outlook profile, as conflicts within the current profile could be causing the error.
