It’s incredibly stressful to be locked out of your computer and then find the one place with the answer is crashing. A Trace ID usually indicates a temporary server-side failure or a specific account conflict rather than a permanent loss of your data.
Since you need immediate support, here are the fastest ways to bypass that crash and get your key:
1. The "OneDrive Full" Fix (Most Likely Cause)
There is a known bug where the BitLocker recovery page crashes if your associated OneDrive storage is full.
- Go to OneDrive.com and sign in.
Check if you are over your storage limit. If so, delete a few large files or empty the recycle bin.
Wait about 15–30 minutes, then try the BitLocker Recovery Page again.
2. The Browser "Bypass"
Sometimes the crash is caused by a bad cookie or a cached authentication session.
Try Incognito/InPrivate Mode: Open your browser's private window and log in from there.
Try a different device: If you're using a phone, switch to a laptop (or vice-versa).
The "New Account" Trick: Some users have success logging into a different Microsoft account first, navigating to the recovery page (which will be empty), and then clicking "Sign in with a different account" to switch back to your primary one.
3. Check for Work or School Accounts
If your device was ever linked to a work or school email, the key might not be on the standard consumer page. Try this alternate URL:
If you still see the Trace ID:
The Trace ID is essentially a "support ticket number" for Microsoft’s internal logs. Since this is a server error, you may need to contact them directly so they can reset the page for your account:
- Go to the Microsoft Support Contact Page.
Type "BitLocker" and select Get Help.
Click Contact Support at the bottom.
Select Windows and Technical Support to get a live chat option.
Important Note: Do not attempt to "reset" or "reinstall" Windows until you are absolutely sure you cannot get this key, as a reinstall will likely wipe your data.
Hope it is useful 😁
