The [me] and the "everyone except external users" keywords don't work

I am trying to create a "My Items" filter in a Microsoft List to see only the entries assigned to me. However, the system does not recognize the [Me] or the Hungarian [Én] keywords in the view settings (My native language is hungarian, and the site is in hungarian as well).

The column is person type.

I also have issues using the "Everyone except external users" group in the environment.

    Hi @Ádám Mózer,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing the details of the issue. I understand you’re experiencing problems with the [Me] token not being recognized in your Microsoft Lists view, as well as difficulties using the “Everyone except external users” group.

Here are suggestion steps you can try to fix it:

1/ Filtering items “assigned to me” (Person column)

The [Me] token (or the Me/@Me option in the modern filter pane) works only with Person‑type columns and remains the same regardless of site language.

This is easiest method: using the Filter pane (no typing needed):

    • Open your list > select the Filter icon.
    • Under your Person column (e.g., Assigned To), choose Me (shown as @Me in modern Lists).
    • Go to All items > Save view as… and give it a name, e.g., My Items.

If you prefer using “Edit current view”, you can also configure it manually in classic view settings:

    • Go to List settings > Views > (your view)
    • In Filter, set: Show items only when Assigned To is equal to [Me]

I’ve tested the [Me] token in my environment and confirmed it works. If [Me] doesn’t work for you, try Me or @Me in the filter pane.

    Note:

    • Groups are not supported - filtering by current user works only with People, not SharePoint groups.
    • Multi‑select Person columns:
      • Filtering behaves differently.
      • Try changing to single‑select, or use contains @Me in the modern filter pane.
    • After tenant migrations:
      • If the Person field contains an old identity, [Me] may return no results until the item is updated with your current cloud identity.

2/ “Everyone except external users” (EEEU) issues

To help you more effectively, I’d like to gather a few details:

    1. Which site type is your list on? (Communication site, Microsoft 365 group‑connected Team site, or standalone SharePoint site?)
    2. About your Person column:
      • Is it single‑select or multi‑select?
      • Is it set to People only (not groups)?
      • What is the Show field setting (e.g., “Name (with presence)”)?
    3. For “Everyone except external users”: Are you planning to
      • grant access tenant‑wide (e.g., intranet scenario), or
      • use it on a private Microsoft 365 group site?

If you see an error message, or if the group isn’t showing up in the People Picker, please feel free to share a screenshot or the exact wording. That will help me identify the root cause more quickly.

Thank you for your time and understanding. Once I have the additional details, I’ll be able to guide you through the next steps.

    Warm regards.

In Microsoft Lists, the filter token %me can be used to filter records assigned to the current user. However, if the system does not recognize the [Me] keyword or the Hungarian equivalent [Én], it may be due to localization issues or specific configurations in your environment. Ensure that the column type for the assigned user is correctly set as a person type and that the user has appropriate permissions to view the items.

Regarding the "Everyone except external users" group, this group is typically removed when a Microsoft 365 group is converted from public to private, as this behavior is by design. If you need to use this group, you may need to create a separate SharePoint permissions group and assign the same permissions role as the original group, then add the "Everyone except external users" group to this new group.

If you continue to experience issues, consider reaching out to your administrator or the SharePoint Community for further assistance.
