Hello,

I struggle to get access my BitLocker recovery key. It is saved to my Microsoft account (confirmed by the manage-bde command on my PC), but the account portal does not display it.

When I go to the recovery key page on my Microsoft account, the page loads a skeleton layout but the actual content never appears. I only see grey placeholders. I also get error messages with a TraceID when trying alternative URLs.

What I have tested:

  • Multiple browsers (Chrome, Edge, mobile)
  • Multiple devices (2 computers, 2 smartphones)
  • Multiple networks (home Wi-Fi, mobile data)
  • Incognito mode

Other Microsoft accounts work perfectly on the same device and browser, so the issue is specific to my account

Using browser DevTools (F12), I can see an HTTP 404 error on a JavaScript file from the account portal. The script fails to load, which prevents the page from rendering.

I contacted Microsoft support today and spoke with 5 different agents across multiple teams. One agent confirmed this is a server-side issue affecting my account. However, no one was able to provide a workaround or a timeline for resolution. I am a physician and this computer contains important work files that I need to work. I would greatly appreciate any guidance on how to resolve this or any alternative way to retrieve my recovery key.

Thank you for your time.

    Hello,

I’m seeing a lot of people report the same issue today, which makes me think this is likely on the server side as well. Microsoft hasn’t posted a very specific public confirmation or announcement yet, but it wouldn’t surprise me if this is related to a disruption in an Azure datacenter, such as a power or infrastructure event. Since many Microsoft services run on Azure, an incident there could easily explain what we’re seeing. That’s just a reasonable guess.

It seems that you are experiencing a server-side issue with your Microsoft account that is preventing you from accessing your BitLocker recovery key. Since you've already confirmed that the key is saved to your account and have tested various browsers, devices, and networks without success, here are a few alternative approaches you might consider:

    1. Check Microsoft Entra ID: If your BitLocker recovery keys are stored in Microsoft Entra ID, you can access them via the Microsoft account portal. Make sure to check this option if applicable.
    2. Use a Different Recovery Method: If you have previously saved the recovery key to a USB drive or printed it out, try to locate that information.
    3. Contact Microsoft Support Again: Since you mentioned that you have already contacted support, consider escalating the issue or asking for a specific team that handles account-related issues. They may have more insight into server-side problems affecting your account.
    4. BitLocker Repair Tool: If you are unable to retrieve the recovery key and need immediate access to your files, you might consider using the BitLocker Repair Tool, which can help regain access to your drive if you have the recovery password.
    5. Recovery Image: If all else fails and you are unable to retrieve the key, you may need to use a recovery image for your Surface device, which could lead to data loss. Ensure you have backups of important files in the future.

Unfortunately, without access to the recovery key, your options may be limited, and it's crucial to keep trying to resolve the account issue with Microsoft support.
