How to sign if you get 0x80070422 error message and cannot give feedback because that fails, too?

I'm in a sign-in error loop. When I use the sign-in checker, it says that my personal email sign-in is working. However, when I sign in to my computer, I immediately get an error message: 0x80070422, so I do not have access to my personal emails, OneDrive, Microsoft Teams, etc. If I try to sign in to any Microsoft product, it sends the same error message as above. Microsoft Teams, for example, asks me to sign in with my work email. I recently deleted my work email from Windows as I haven't worked for the company for many years. When I try to sign in with my work email to get help with signing in, the Microsoft message states 'The email or username you entered does not exist'. How do I stop Microsoft products from requiring a work email sign-in? I had my personal email account long before I received the work email account.

    Hi Susan,

    Launch services.msc

    Double-click Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant

Set its start type to Manual. Click Apply.

    Start the service.

Let me know if that fixes the problem.

Hello Ramesh, thank you. I can now access my apps on my computer, but I have an issue with OneDrive. I have completed the setup of the new Teams download. I can access my emails and OneNote. However, for OneDrive, I have two cloud symbols on my app ribbon tray at the bottom of my screen. One symbol is white; when open, it is labelled OneDrive Personal, and I can see my files in the cloud. The other is blue with a line through it; when opened, it asks me to 're-enter credentials'. It asked me to sign in with my old company email. When I removed my old company email and signed in with my personal email, I got an accounts page that showed only my old company email and an option to add another account. When I tried to add my personal account, a window showing my OneDrive file system on my computer opened. However, the accounts page did not show my personal email account after I signed in with it. Further, there is an option in blue under my old work email to unlink the account from the computer. I did that, but now I have the same message as before when I tried to sign in to OneDrive: My email does not exist in tenant 'the name of a previous company' and cannot access the application OneDrive SyncEngine in that tenant. The account needs to be added as an external user in the tenant first. Sign out and sign in again with a different Azure Active Directory user account.

By the way, the computer I am using is a clone of my old computer. Will I have to go through the same procedure I have followed from the beginning with that laptop? It seems to have all the same issues.

    Hello Susan W,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I see that you are having issue signing in with the Microsoft Apps. Before we proceed further, may I know if you are able to log in to the Microsoft website?

Regarding Teams, the reasons of it might be that you are using the work version. In this case, can you please try to uninstall it and then download the free version in this link?

Additionally, can you please try to create another user profile to see if the issue happens there?

In the meantime, here is a few fix that you could try:

    • Reset Update Components.
      1. Type "Command Prompt" in the search bar and select "Run as administrator".
      2. Type these commands and press Enter after each.
        • net stop wuauserv
        • net stop cryptSvc
        • net stop bits
        • net stop msiserver
        • ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
        • ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
        • net start wuauserv
        • net start cryptSvc
        • net start bits
        • net start msiserver
    • Disable IPv6 if it is enabled.
      1. Go to Control Panel > Network & Internet > Network and sharing center > Choose your connection > Properties.
      2. Uncheck IPv6.
      3. Click Apply and OK.
      4. Restart your computer.
    • Clear credentials cache.
      1. Type "Credentials Manager" in the search bar and press Enter.
      2. Remove all entries related to your Microsoft account and the affected apps.
      3. Reset all apps and sign in again.

I followed the steps above. This was the result.

    1. My personal email was the primary email.
    2. There was no option to select Access work or school in Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
    3. I tried to reset Microsoft Store. It gave me the same error message: 0x80070422.
    4. The services were all running.
    5. I uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook and got the same error message: 0x80070422.

I contacted Microsoft Support and got a bot which said I need to go to help.microsoft.com. This is not helpful because the problem is complex.

To resolve the sign-in error 0x80070422 and stop Microsoft products from requiring a work email sign-in, you can try the following steps:

    2. Remove Work Account: If you have previously added a work account, make sure it is completely removed. Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and disconnect any work accounts that are listed.
    3. Reset Microsoft Store: Sometimes, resetting the Microsoft Store can help resolve sign-in issues. Open Run (Windows + R), type wsreset.exe, and press Enter. This will reset the Microsoft Store cache.
    4. Check Services: The error 0x80070422 may occur if certain services are disabled. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and ensure that the following services are running:
      • Windows Update
      • Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
      • Cryptographic Services If any of these services are stopped, right-click on them and select Start.
    5. Reinstall Microsoft Apps: If the issue persists, consider reinstalling the affected Microsoft applications (like Teams or OneDrive). You can uninstall them from Settings > Apps, and then reinstall from the Microsoft Store or the official website.
    6. Contact Support: If none of the above steps work, you may need to contact Microsoft support for further assistance, especially since you mentioned issues with signing in to get help.

Following these steps should help you resolve the sign-in error and regain access to your personal Microsoft products without needing a work email.
