My classnotebook doesn't appear when trying to add students

I have a few students who haven't been able to access my classnotebook. I have sent them an invitation, and some have been able to do it. I cannot add the students to my classnotebook when I am in the app or web browser

Here are the steps I've taken on the web browser and app: I am in my class>select Class Notebook>Add/Remove Students>A new window opens and another class appears but not the class I want to add them to.

    Hi @Jocelyn Weart,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you very much for reaching out to us regarding the issue with adding students to your Class Notebook. I appreciate your patience and the details you provided.

Below, I have outlined the reason this occurs and shared my recommendations, which I hope you will find helpful:

    1/ Why this is happening

When you select Class > Class Notebook > Add/Remove Students, the setup window may sometimes open a different Class Notebook instead of the one you expect.

This usually occurs when there are multiple Class Notebooks with similar names, the notebook was created through Microsoft Teams (where student access is managed via the Team rather than the Class Notebook wizard), or there is a sign‑in/session conflict caused by using multiple Microsoft accounts.

    2/ Recommended solution

If your Class Notebook was created from a Microsoft Teams class, the correct way to add students is directly through Teams. Please:

    1. Open Microsoft Teams
    2. Go to your Class Team
    3. Select More options (⋯) > Manage team
    4. User's image
    5. Under Members > Add member
    6. User's image

Once added, student access will automatically sync to the Class Notebook. Please allow 5–30 minutes for the permissions to fully update.

3/ Alternative option (Only applicable if the Class Notebook was not created from Microsoft Teams)

If you prefer to manage students directly in Class Notebook. Please:

    1. Open an InPrivate/Incognito browser window
    2. User's image
    3. Sign in using only your school account
    4. Go to: https://www.onenote.com/classnotebook/notebooks
    5. Select the correct Class Notebook for your class
    6. Choose Add/Remove Students from that notebook

This helps ensure the correct notebook is selected and avoids opening a different class by mistake.

    Notes:

    • Please ensure that you are listed as the Owner of the class or Team and that the affected students are signed in using school accounts from the same organization, not guest or personal accounts.
    • If the Class Notebook tab in Teams is linked to the wrong notebook, you can remove the tab and re‑add it using “Use an existing notebook”, selecting the correct one.

I hope this information is helpful.  Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to reach out.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.

It seems you are experiencing issues with adding students to your Class Notebook. Here are a few things to consider:

    1. Check Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to add students to the Class Notebook. Sometimes, admin settings might restrict certain actions.
    2. Refresh the App/Browser: Try refreshing the web browser or restarting the OneNote app to see if that resolves any temporary glitches.
    3. Correct Class Selection: When you open the window to add/remove students, make sure you are selecting the correct class. If another class appears, it might be due to a navigation error or a caching issue.
    4. Use the Correct Version: Ensure you are using the latest version of OneNote, as older versions may have compatibility issues. The Class Notebook toolbar is built into the Microsoft 365 desktop version, while the web version should not require additional setup.
    5. Check for Known Issues: Sometimes, there might be known issues affecting the functionality. You can check the Microsoft support pages for any updates or troubleshooting steps related to Class Notebooks.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider reaching out to Microsoft support for further assistance.
