I get an error message when I try to open my one drive personal vault. What do I do?

I can't get into my personal vault in one drive. I just switched to a new phone. Does this do anything to keep me from getting in. Before taking my laptop for hardware work, I was getting an error message that one of my files was not compatible with one drive, but it didn't say which one.

I could always get in using my passkey. I did get into the one drive once while the laptop was being fixed, but I had to get in using a code sent to an email address.

Please help.

Thanks.

    Hi, Bradley Davis

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Sorry for this unwanted experience that you're facing. Personal Vault uses an extra security check, so after a device change (new phone) it can start asking for a different verification method and the Windows app can sometimes get “stuck” with old Vault sign-in info saved on the PC. This doesn’t usually mean your files are gone, it just means the Vault unlock step needs to be refreshed.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

    1) First, confirm your Vault still opens online (quick sanity check)

Open OneDrive on the web and try the Personal Vault there. If it unlocks online, your account is fine and the issue is most likely just the Windows app on this PC.

    2) Fix the Windows app unlock by clearing the saved Vault info

This is the “reset the Vault unlock state on the computer” fix:

    • Quit OneDrive (right-click the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area > Quit/Close).
    • Open Command Prompt (Start menu, type Command Prompt), then run this command exactly: REG DELETE HKCU\Software\Microsoft\OneDrive\Accounts\Personal /v VaultBackupGuid
    • It’s OK if it says it can’t find the key/value, that just means it wasn’t there.
    • Open Credential Manager (Start menu > Credential Manager) > Windows Credentials.
    • Find “Microsoft OneDrive Generic Data - Personal Vault VHD info” and Remove it.
    • Start OneDrive again, then try unlocking Personal Vault. If you see a prompt about keeping items, choose Keep [XXX] items.

    3) If it still won’t unlock, use an alternate route while Windows is being stubborn

You can still access Personal Vault via OneDrive on the web or the OneDrive mobile app as a workaround.

    4) About the “new phone” and the email code you saw

That’s normal. Vault may switch between passkey, email/SMS codes, or Authenticator depending on what security methods are currently available on your account. If your old phone was part of your sign-in method, you may simply be getting prompted to re-verify using email until the new phone is fully recognized.

    5) The earlier “file not compatible with OneDrive” message

That warning is usually separate from Vault unlocking. Once you’re back in, if sync complains again, check whether the problem happens only inside Vault or across normal OneDrive folders. (If it’s only inside Vault, it can point to the Vault container needing the reset above.)

Hope this helps. Feel free to get back if you need further assistance.
