Outlook freezes

Outlook freezes on loading profile or won't open at all. Both in normal mode and in Safe Mode. Only way to clear it is to restart. Also freezes when I use Outlook Data files brought in from a C: folder for archiving. Use to keep numerous archive files in Outlook all the time and never had any issues. Now the only way to use archive files is to bring them in offline and even then Outlook freezes up at time. All .pst file are under 10 GB, most under 2 GB. Ran external repair tool (Stellar) on all .pst files and still having the issues.

    Hi @Jim Barger

Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Q&A forum.

To better understand your situation, may I clarify the following:

    1. Have you stored your PST file in a cloud‑syncing location such as OneDrive?  Storing PST files in cloud storage can sometimes lead to unexpected behavior, including freezing or performance issues. If this applies to your setup, please move the PST file to a local folder and check whether the issue persists.
    2. Could you let me know your current Windows KB version?  You can check this by going to: Settings > Windows Update > Update history, similar to the image below.  User's image

In the meantime, it may also be helpful to create a new Outlook profile, as suggested by the Q&A Assistant. This step often resolves profile‑related issues that can cause freezing.

You can create a new Outlook profile by following these steps:  Control Panel > Search for “Mail” in the search bar > Mail (Microsoft Outlook) > Show Profiles > Add > Complete the remaining setup steps.

Thank you for the reply: Not syncing to OneDrive - all .pst's stored on local drive. Also previously created new Outlook profile. KB is KB5074753, installed 1/26/26. Thanks much for reviewing!

If Outlook is freezing on loading the profile or not opening at all, there are several potential causes and solutions you can try:

    1. Check for Updates: Ensure that you have the latest updates installed for Outlook. Sometimes, outdated software can lead to performance issues.
    2. Repair Office Programs: You can repair your Office installation. Exit any running Office programs, go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, right-click on Microsoft Office, and select Repair.
    3. Repair Outlook Data Files: Since you mentioned using .pst files, you can use the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) to scan and repair your Outlook data files. Make sure to exit Outlook before running this tool.
    4. Antivirus Software: Check if your antivirus software is up-to-date and whether it might be conflicting with Outlook. You can try disabling any Outlook integration within the antivirus software temporarily to see if it resolves the issue.
    5. Create a New User Profile: Sometimes, user profiles can become corrupted. You can create a new Outlook profile by going to Control Panel > User Accounts > Mail > Show Profiles, and then adding a new profile.
    6. Selective Startup: Perform a selective startup to identify if any other applications or services are causing conflicts with Outlook. This can help isolate the problem.
    7. Reduce Archive File Size: Although you mentioned that your .pst files are under 10 GB, consider reducing the size of the archive files further, as large files can sometimes lead to performance issues.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to consult further resources or consider contacting Microsoft support for more specialized assistance.
